Background:

Active duty military stationed in the god forsaken state of New Jersey. I live in New Jersey. I do not have a NJ Drivers license. I already own a number of firearms, and was only looking to get a Firearms Purchase ID so I can buy pistol ammo. No other reason, and have been trying to avoid this as long as possible.

So a while back I talked with an officer at my local PD. He tells me that because I am Active duty I should be able to apply there and not need to go to the State PD. But he wasn't sure. Well today I stop by. The lady that handles the paperwork tells me that she had called a few months back about this very situation, and that I have to go to the State PD as she only can do it for people with a NJ drivers license. Ok, I'll go there.

So I stop by the state police department. He tells me that it doesn't matter, and I have to go to the local police department where I am living. I tell him I am an out of state resident, don't have a NJ drivers license, and was told by them to come here. I ask them if they can call them to explain, because if I go back they are just going to send me back here. Instead I pretty much got the "eff off" from them.

Seems to me like the State PD just didn't want to deal with me. I guess I'll just buy my ammo online and out of state. This is ridiculous. I hate this state.

Drive over to PA or NY state (not NYC) and buy all the ammunition you want.

Online retailers may not wish to ship to NJ to avoid the possibility of hassles.

Cbeck w/ the ATF, they actually have some clarifying rules about active duty armed service members, wrt to this sort of thing.

AFAIK, buying ammo out of state is still legal for NJ inmates, and probably the way to go. You won't be the only one.

I've purchased many times without hassle from online sites, but some want a copy of the FID. If you're at Dix, you're not far from the Burlington Bristol Bridge, and Walmart is only five minutes away on the other side. Thank you for your service.

When I lived in NJ, I went shooting at Ft. Dix (Range 14, the "Public Range").

As for the FID, could you get a non-driver state ID instead of a Driver's license? Although I think the best idea is to travel across the river to PA and purchase your ammo and accessories.
