I recently took delivery of my custom AR-10 from JP Enterprises.

It has a 20" lightweight barrel, JP freefloat tube, extra front sight base (real gas block is under handguard), match JP single stage trigger, Bennie Cooley muzzle comp, extra sling & bipod studs, JP target stock -- I'll switch that out for an A1 for action shooting. Sling is V-Tac.

I intend to use this as a "precision" rifle out to about 600 yards, and in that application for long-range field courses. Additionally, with iron sights mounted, it can shoot the "He-Man" class which is becoming popular at 3Gun matches. Finally, it can be fitted with an ACOG for normal Modified/Tactical class 3Gun or any other random action shooting. I hope to use it to bag some Wild Boar in N.C. in 2004 (hint, hint, Abe!).

The first setup is for long-range shooting with a Leupold 4.5-14X M1:

The second setup is for fast action shooting with a TA11 ACOG:

YEAAAA BABY!!!! That's one fine package! If you don't mind us being nosey, how much does a rig like this set one back??

ScottsGT,

JP's AR10's are about $2195 for the lightweight version, and a couple hundred more for the 24" "T" model with bull barrel.

The optics are both right around $950 each when good mounts are added in.

You can get normal-capacity AR10 mags two ways: send your pre-ban M1A mags to Armalite for conversion (or do it yourself if you're good with metal); or buy mag bodies and conversion kits and convert your own M1A mags to AR10 mags. The conversion kits are $30 each.

What made you choose a JP rifle over anything else?

I am looking at a nearly identical setup and am considering having GA Precision do the work.

Any suggestions?

To be honest, I didn't investigate other options for the AR10 build. I've met John and all his stuff is first-rate. JP is easy to deal with and ships custom rifles fast - like 6-8 weeks. His customer service is unmatched.

The default options on the JP rifle were real close to exactly what I wanted. I got the JP trigger, adjustable gas block, modular float tube, and nice light barrel.

The only thing I would have preferred to have changed was a 2" O.D. float tube instead of the larger "AR10" sized one, but that has to do with the barrel nut diameter.

Skunkabilly,

The barrel is from JP, but I don't know where they get their barrel blanks. I haven't measured it, but it looks about 0.7" under the tube, 0.8-something" at the gas block to match the standard Armalite diameter there, and then about 0.7" to the muzzle.

Can you even cut a .308 barrel to A2 and still have enough metal left?

One thing I've noticed about the AR-10 is that one has to be an ape to shoot it comfortably offhand with the normal A2-length stock. You'll notice there's an extra 3/4" between the pistol grip and the rear of the lower receiver. With an A2 stock, this means a length-of-pull (LOP) of 14.25".

For comparison, an A2 stock on an AR15 has about 13.5" LOP, and an A1 on AR15 has about 13.0" LOP. Put the same A1 stock on the AR10 and you're still at 13.75", or even longer than an A2 on an AR15.

OH Man, that's a nice wepon. You are going to have so much fun with that. It'll be hell on wild hogs. Oh and, are you callin' me an ape?!?

Sure does look nice! Please, please keep us posted on how well it shoots and whether or not you like the JP trigger.

mpthole,

The JP trigger is The Sh--err, The Stuff. It's most excellent. Even better if you have the guys at JP do it. Single stage. 3# for an AR15 trigger, 4# in the AR10 - it feels like less. No take-up. No creep. Maybe like 0.100" of trigger movement, total. Crisp and prompt reset.

If you want a single-stage AR trigger, JP should be your first choice.

I will post a full accuracy report when I've put more rounds downrange.
