New M44 or .22 kit for AR?

I am debating between a Mosin M44 and a Ciener .22LR conversion kit. (assuming price is the same, i know it really isn't, but price is not the deciding factor)

I have had a M44 on my "wish list" for a while. I have had an AR-15 on the list too(but a few spots above the M44). About 3 months ago I stated buying pieces to build an AR I finished the build about 2 months ago. I love my AR!! But the price of .223 is very high. The closest place I can go to shoot my rifles for free(on private land) is 3.5 hours away. I know a place that would let me shoot .22LR that is only 45min away. Plus the price of .22LR is much lower. The ciener kit is a drop in so I would be getting trigger time on the AR platform, with the actual sights and trigger. Did I mention that I love my AR!

Now for the M44, It would be a whole new gun opposed to a accessory. I enjoy collecting Mil-Surp Guns. The price of it isn't going to drop. It will increase in value. I don't mind buying a Case of Surplus ammo($90/440rnds).

What should I do?

A Ceiner AR kit is on the order of ~$200 IIRC. M44s are roughly $75. The cost is most certainly different, but I would still go with the .22 kit because you will be more likely to be able to shoot it often. You may want to go with a Ceiner kit clone, as JAC is not always pleasant to deal with. I would recommend BDM mags, but I'm going to guess that your state doesn't allow hi-caps.

$200 for a Ciener? I got mine for $140 from Brownell's,IIRC.
I hope to have a dedicated upper in .22 RF if M1 sales ever get its act together.

I just glanced at his website and it said $190, but better deals can likely be had, as you got. Have you found any leading issues with the gas port? I've always wondered about that.

i can get a M44 for $80 at a local gun shop, I can get a ciener kit for $140. I am only able to get one or the other. I don't want anyone to think that price is no object, otherwise somebody would recommend a dedicated upper(i don't want and can't afford). I also DON'T want anybody saying take the M44 and use the left over money for ammo.

Seeing as how the AR was high up on your list and the nearest place for you to shoot real rifle rounds is that far away, I would go with the Ciener, as it lets you shoot the rifle you've been waiting for, you can get 1,000 rounds of it for the cost of 500 rounds of 54r, and I am biased toward .22s.

Don't let me sway you too much if you're set on something else, though.

I have a ciener conversion and I really like it but don't expect great accuracy out of them. Mine shoots about an inch at 25 yards. About 3 inchs at 50yards. That said it runs great and it's a blast to shoot cans and golf balls as long as keep them at a reasonable distance. If you can get one for $140 I'd say go for it. Mark

I think I can get both! I just got an M44(pick it up tomorrow). I am asking for the .22 kit for christmas. But most every one is out of stock or wants over $200 for one.

Get a 22LR Conversion...you'll be much happier with cost of ammo...first couple of bulk packs and it's paid for!

YOu can really get both, but if you MUST get just one, the .22 comversion kit. A spikes kit. I have their upper, and it is flawless, (except when i let my brother shoot it...) I have had no problems with it.

I did it! I ordered a Spikes Tactical .22 conversion kit, before it sells out.

So I guess I have both now(or will when the kit comes in)!

Black Dog machine makes the best Ciener/Spikes conversion mags. HTey are plastic, with either 10rd or 27rd capacties. Expensive at $30 per piece, but *almost** worth it.

*regular ciener mags are just as much and not as good.

Ciener mags also do not have a last round bolt hold open, and the firing pin can wang into the chamber if you accidentally dry fire. Black Dog magazines come with a bolt hold-open follower that you can use if you want, though using it reduces capacity by 1.
