I had the opportunity to trade a Kimber PC Ten II for a NIB Marlin Guide Gun in 45-70. Anyone have one thats blued? How do you like it and have you had any problems? Thanks in advance.

it, like most marlins will need and action job. my uncle has one in 444marlin. he went through a box of shells and then left it in the safe.

i shoot my brother in laws quite ofton and love it its the older ported blued one

the only thing he did to it was put a sling and a set of lyman peeps

if i buy one(which its on my list) i would put he ghost rings and a low power scope(2-3x)

I have an 1895G, 18.5" guide gun w/o ports.
I've done a trigger job, pull is about 2lbs, crisp. Best trigger of the 3 Marlins I own.

It's also quite accurate. I get ~2" groups @100yds with an RCBS 300gr FNGC I cast. With gascheck from W/W metal w/95-5 leadfree solder added, casts to 320gr. With SPG lube over 47.5gr of IMR4198, it delivers ~1,850fps. Rather stout !

I've gotten 3-shot groups of 1.25" with the Lee 405gr FN-HB, sized to .459", lubed with SPG, over 53.0gr of IMR4064 for 1,900fps. VERY STOUT RECOIL.

This afternoon I was playing with some factory duplication loads using BlueDot, 2400, and TrailBoss. With the above two bullets I was getting 1,150fps to 1,400fps and 1-1.5" groups at 50yds. I was able to punch at-will some soda cans left on the berm at ~ 120yds with 3" high zero at 50yds. Really enough for any purpose I'll likely have except for spending a couple of summers flying float-planes in Alaska. (a dream working-vacation I've been hatching for several years).

Very, Very excellent rifles !! I also really, really like my M336C in .35Rem (a '70's vintage rifle), likewise a Glenfield(Marlin) Mod30. A M336 with a birch stock and 1/2 magazine. About a 1/2lb lighter than the M336 and a full pound lighter than the M1895. Both of these rifles will shoot at or under 1moa with select handloads. (3-shots, of course).

1895 GG with ports

I purchased the Marlin 1895 GG with ported barrel (all were blued then) when they first came out. This rifle has about 500 rounds through it, all Bull-X 405 grain hard cast bullets. In working on a load for this gas checkless, lubricated bullet I found 42 grains of IMR 3031 to give decent accuracy without causing lead stripping in the rifling. Velocity is probably about 1400 fps. I have a Lyman #66 aperture sight attached. The rifle gives decent enough accuracy that shooting it offhand at 200 yards is rewarding. The action is very smooth, having improved with use to the point of almost effortless force required on the lever for full cycling. The trigger was actually quite good out of the box, for a lever action rifle; no creep and about 5 lbs pull, consistently. The bluing held up for several deer seasons, when I used the rifle to hunt during precipitation that would make the use of a scope disadvantageous. I have always liked the 405 grain bullet in the .45-70, using this bullet weight exclusively. I have never had anything but a one shot kill on any of the deer I've hit using this cartridge, whether with a cast lead or jacketed bullet.

I have one and the only thing I have done to it was put a Williams WGRS peep sight on to it. When testing handloads to find the right load I had a Leupold 2x-7x on it and got several groups at 1". My load of 44 grs. IMR 4198 with a Hornady 350 gr FN produces a velocity of 1800 fps. Quite stout but it really hammers a deer. The rifle itself is very handy in those tight quarters that a hunter finds themselves in now and then.

Thanks for the replies. This gun has the ported barrel and doesn't look to have been fired. No scratches on the stock and the blueing is perfect. Can't wait to get to the range and see how it performs. Also noticed that this gun doesn't have the Micro groove barrel, or a least it's not stamped Micro Groove.

My 1895G is one of my favorite rifles. A great brush gun and all around fun to shoot. Mine has the ported barrel which helps control the muzzle climb. A trigger job would help but I have no issues which hitting what I want.

All you guys throwing scopes on your guide guns are making me sick to my stomach. It is your gun and you can do anything you want to it but I had to at least say something.
