I got my Marlin 30as today! It was manufactured in 1988 making it 21 years old, and I got it brand new, never fired, in the box for $380 before tax and a free box of Hornady ammo! I shot about 10 rounds through it this afternoon. I'll be deer hunting on a friends land this season and his dad gave me a scope (Tasco 3-9x40) for free, so I mounted that tonight after the trip to wal-mart. I'll be going back tomorrow to sight it in for deer season opening on Saturday. Hopefully I'll harvest my first deer!

I can't find much information about the Marlin 30as, so if you know anything about it or have a link do share. ;)

It will last you a lifetime, they are great rifels just not fancy....good luck and great hunting you GOT a good deal for the times.

Thanks, Im excited to get it sighted in tomorrow before I take it out into the field on Saturday for its big debut.

Great looking rifle. If it were mine, I'd want to go for some lower rings. Usually want the axis of the sights as low to the bore as you can get it without having trouble getting your eye behind the glass.

MrClean I was JUST about to ask you guys about the rings. I dont think I like them, my head sits up so high that pretty much just my jaw bone rests on the stock. Should I get a stock riser thingy or just take the $10 mounts back and trade em?

The see through mounts are most allways to high, but some folks want to see thier iron sights, but you dont need them if your scope is set on low power for a quick snap shop you can always power up and take your time i like the 3x9 because you can check out your deer more closely on 9x and then back off once you decide to take the shot....

Yea I think I'm going to take them back. And if I look through them I can only see the front sight so I cant use the sight by looking trough the loops anyway but I can just see the iron sights through the mounts that attach to the receiver so I guess the big loops do no good.

Wallyworld sells all three elevations of weaver mounts for around $10; I would take those back & get the lowest option. With the hammer extension they should be fine. That rifle looks perfect, by the way. Very nice. No way does this look 20 years old.

Thanks for all the compliments, and yes it is a 30-30, but I'm not sure what kind of wood the stock is.

I just got done sighting in my scope after putting it on some lower mounts and I LOVE MY RIFLE!! It shoots right on the bullseye and it's alot more comfortable to shoulder. Check it out:
:D

I still need a strap though, anyone know how I can put a strap on here without having to drill any holes since there aren't any strap mounts?

Well I don't know how to mount a harness ring without drilling... but I did drill a mount on my ruger 10/22. Pretty simple and all I had was a hand drill, a pair of viener calipers (for measuring the sling mount screw diameter), and some guerilla wood glue.

This is what I did:

1. Measure the mount screw, get a drill bit that is just slightly smaller. Also measure the length and ensure your drill bit is set back as far as you can to ensure you don't drill to far down.

2. Drill hole.

3. I put a little wood glue and put a flexible washer on my sling screw and threaded it into the stock. Once you hit contact twist until you have a perpendicular fit. The washer plus glue will ensure it stays.

That's what I did, got me through a weekend at appleseed no problem.

Fantastic rifle, once you are finally sighted in make sure you shoot a box O ammo through your gun to get a better feel, 30-30 around here (last time I bought) was only $15, it's worth it vice missing THAT deer.

/Never been hunting with a rifle only a bow
//have not yet bagged one :(

The hunt was AWESOME!!! My first deer hunt ever and on opening day I got out to the stand at about 6:15 and about 15 mintues later I heard alot of grunting and snorting in the brush behind me. Next thing I know a doe runs across the path, about 15 mintues later, while still very dark I see a antlered deer come out of the woods for just a few moments then go back in.

Not too long after that a does came out of the woods and stood broadside for about 5 minutes and ate leaves off a bush but I didnt feel comfortable making the shot because it was still just a bit too dark to see out of the scope good.

Very little activity after that until I saw the same doe stand up where it had beded back down but I could get a clean shot, so I passed it up thinking I probably missed my only shot of the day when I first saw it.

After about 45 minutes to and hour later I began to get weary and started to kick myself in the butt for not taking the shot on the broadside doe, since there was no activity at all except for 1 grunt a quick bit of brush movement.

Then I was comtemplating how I was going to go pee :p thinking should I get out of the stand and walk away but then they know where I am, or pee off the stand and risk them smelling it, but I had to go soo bad.

Then I saw alot of movement and there he was....the deer I was soon to harvest. He made his way down the game trail and stopped to eat berries, but I could see him through the bush, he trotted away and I thought my short window of oppurtunity was over. Then the buck stopped right in the only clearing on the trail and I knew this was my only chance.

I leaned as far out of this little stand that I wasn't strapped into (dumb me) to get a better shot while 12 feet off the ground. I FELL OUT!!! hahaha just kidding, thought I'd get your attention :D.

Ok so as I said I leaned out and took the 50 yard shot, the Marlin 30-30 dropped the buck in it's tracks. I did decide to take another shot about 45 seconds later to dispatch the animal faster even though he wasn't about to get up and run away.

Here he is! 7 point buck, roughly 150 pounds or more. (didn't weigh him)

Edit: Oh yea and he was a real goofy lookin' imbred, his bottom jaw was about 2 inches shorter than it should be and he looked all bucked tooth haha.
