Looking at new barrels for a mauser 98 in .308 win I saw this green mountain barrel all ready to go for $88 that I could put on backorder. I was wondering about how much it would cost me to get a gunsmith to install this. I saw people say it will cost like $250 for a barrel blank but since this is made for the mauser action I was wondering how much it would cost since there is not all the extra work involved. Here is the link to the barrel- http://www.midwayusa.com/product/16...chrome-moly-in-the-white?cm_vc=ProductFinding

The first issue that you'll run into is that there are only Green Mountain barrels listed that aren't marked as discontinued by midway. If that one does happen to show up, the quality can be hit-or-miss, but the one's I've seen and shot are pretty good. I have a 257 Roberts with one of the Green Mountain barrels and it shoots extremely well. I've been waiting for a 6.5x55 and 7x57 barrel from them to build a couple of budget rifles on already-modified rifles I've picked up. Both of those were discontinued. I think Midway will get something to replace them at that price point, but I don't know how long that will be.

Ok even if I have trouble with that if I could find something somewhere else or even midway has shilen barrels for mausers that are more expensive how much would it cost to get my rifle rebarreld?

If all you want is the barrel installed and headspaced, you're probably looking at $100-150. That's what I've been quoted lately around here. For my 257 Roberts, I had Mark Skaggs do it along with a couple of other things. He's a little cheaper, but shipping puts it about even with the local smiths.

I don't know what his backlog is right now, but it was about 6 months last time I checked. That was almost a year ago though.

The going rate to do a straight barrel swap like you are talking about for a Pre Threadded, short chambered barrel , and just to set the Headspace is about $150.00.
But that does not include things that you might want to do like having the Lugs Lapped, Bluing or resetting the iron sights
But most Mausers can be swapped out, without lapping the lugs if it is the original bolt.
But you can check your bolt lug engagement, while you are waiting for your barrel , and decide if you want to go the extra step.
I have a Czech Mauser with a Green Mountain .308 barrel in the military step configuration, and it is very accurate.
The Adams Bennet Barrels in the sporter Contours are also very nice for the price, and I have at least 10 of them on sporterized rifles from .257 Roberts 25-06, .308, .35 Whelen, .30-06 and others.

What is the advantage to having the lugs lapped? Is it that much better accuracy wise?

The lug engagement can effect accuracy, if it is very poor and both lugs are not contacting the receiver equally.
Also when the headspace is set with the lugs Lapped, the bolt is making Full or Optimum contact with the receiver for consistant headspacing over the life of the rifle.
I have found on Mil Surp rifles that were Re Armored, they sometimes have the bolts swapped.
The headspace is good Safety Wise, but when you check the bolt lug engagement, one lug is hitting the receiver more than the other, or the lugs are only contacting the receiver with about 10% of the engagement surface.
You can not Lap the Bolt after the headspace is set, so when Re Barreling, it is a good time to put everything right.

Does anybody else have any suggestions for some good deals on prethreaded barrels like the green mountain?
