I've been an M1/M1A shooter with iron sights heretofore. I'm thinking of getting into Varmint hunting/target shooting with a bolt action rifle. I've tentatively narrowed my choices down to a Savage mod. 10 or 12 or Remington 700 in either .223 Rem or .308Win and using a Burris or Leupold 4/4.5-12x. I'd appreciate recommendations for rifle and scope setups and, if other rifles make the most sense, your thoughts on these as well.

Thanks in advance.

Cheers,

Harry

Looking at another thread that seems to address the rifle question. Sorry for the bandwidth pollution. Advice on scopes would be welcome, though.

Thanks,

Harry

FH - When I used to hunt coyotes and bobcats for their pelts to earn money. I used a Ruger M77 Mark II bull barrel .22-250 with a 10X Leupold.

It was the most effective rifle I have ever used on varments and up to mule deer.

And, even though I now shoot a .25-06 Ruger M77 Mark II. I still prefer a .22-250.

BTW, welcome here. This is a great place.

Welcome. :)

I settled on a Tikka T3 Varmint in 223 for similar duties, and have been exceptionally pleased with the choice. I got mine with the 1:8" twist barrel so that I can use the heavier 223 bullets.
