New Mexico Gun-Related Questions

"Blizzard" is an over-statement though
Perhaps, but to those of us who grew up there, those every ten-year storms qualify, especially when accompanied by New Mexico's usual 40MPH winds.

The reason there are deaths in snowstorms in ABQ . . . is because people in these areas are not used to driving in hazzardous conditions
Well, yes, if you're talking about car wrecks. Until I was 11, I grew up in Denver, so even though I never drove in the snow until I was about 22 (when we got a big snow fall in SoNM) I remembered watching my dad's driving and just casually drove by all of the idiots with 4x4s stuck in the snow.

As for the freezing-related deaths out on I-40 between ABQ and Moriarty or ABQ and Gallup, it is usually out-of-state travellers who ignored the State Police warnings, because they come from somewhere where they get "real" snow, and figure "how bad can it be in the desert?". Most New Mexicans know better than to ignore the State Police during snow storms.

CCW restrictions pretty disappointing

I just read these carry restrictions on the NM website. Add in state parks and this covers about 90% of the places I go outside of home. I'd basically be leaving the gun in the car most of the time. Places that SERVE alcohol, I can understand (sorta). But going down for a felony if you walk into a Walmart that happens to sells wine? Very disappointing for a "gun friendly" state.

There are a wide variety of “licensed liquor establishments” in New Mexico, including: saloons, bars, taverns, pubs, nightclubs, restaurants, pizza parlors, golf courses, country clubs, private and fraternal clubs, racetracks, sportplexes, coliseums, pavilions, concert theaters, hotel lounges, gas stations, convenience stores, grocery stores, supermarkets, mixed product stores (i.e. Wal-Mart, Costco, Walgreen’s, Sam’s Club, Furr’s, Smith’s, Raley’s, etc…) It is a felony to carry any firearm, loaded or unloaded, into any area of these businesses (See Sections 60-3A-3.M, & 30-7-3, NMSA 1978).

I love New Mexico for it's gun laws. Heck, the wife and I moved to Nevada for a while, and came back.

My favorite gun store here is Ron Peterson's. They always treat me right. ALWAYS. It's really nice.

I'm a big, moderately intimidating, all black wearing biker / goth / rivethead / whatever, and I've never been harassed for open carry. If the cops don't jump all over me for it, you should be fine.
