A brand-new (to me) Mosin Nagant M44! Including tax, I got it for $91. It's also my very first bolt-action rifle. I also bought 50 rounds of Bulgarian ammo for it, though two turned out to be unsafe to shoot. (One had a cracked case, the other one had a badly cracked case, the bullet actually popped right out.) Anyway, here's the rifle. Sorry for the crappy pics. A professional photographer I ain't.

I did take the time to look up the aresenal on 7.62x54r.net, and it's an Izhevsk. The date on the rifle is 1945. There are also a few other markings on the barrel that I can't figure out what, if anything, they mean. For example, next to the hammer & sickle at the top, there is what looks like a "y" with a circle around it. Also what looks like either a zero or the letter "O" with a circle around it. The serial number is PA ----. Any resident Mosin experts around here who can shed some light on this?

the Y is a black powder proof. i have no idea why there would be one on a gun that was around long after the total adoption of smokeless

the two o' is an accuracy proof. basicly means Ivan picked up the rifle off the line, shot at the target, and got in the general area. and gave it a wack with a stamp

theres so many stamps on MN's/ many i think are just stamps to aprove the stamps, that aproved the stamps .....

Thanks for the information! Sorry for neglecting this thread...I forgot to check it, I guess.

On another Mosin-related topic, if I wanted to put a scope on it, how would I do that? Preferably without damaging the rifle. No drilling holes and whatnot.

You better go out and buy some Mosin ammo. It is getting more expensive by the day! I ordered 880 rds. of 147 gr. light ball from AIM yesterday. Total cost was $128.40 to my door. I was going to buy some Romanian 8mm ammo, but now AIM is selling it by the box of 20 rds. @ $3.95 a box. Without ammo, your Mosin just becomes an expensive wood and steel club.

Between my dad and I, we burned up all the ammo I bought for it at the gun show where I got my Mosin. I've checked around online at every ammo place I could think of, and it seems like AIM Surplus has the best prices for x54R ammo. But right now, all I see is 300 round cans of Bulgarian heavy ball for $32.95 and Prvi Partizan ammo for $8.95/box! :barf: I need to get me some money and order ammo!

those prices arnt great. in MA ( notorious for high ammo prices due to the almost dealer exclusive ammo laws) i can get 440 tins for about 50$ ( 52 i think it was)

id suggest you check around local. and just because they dont have any out. dont be afraid to ask. i had a guy dig some out of a closet for me. it had been there so long he didnt even remember the price!

Dont overlook the that silver case light ball (hungarian?) at aim. Its more expensive but, my 91/30 is a tack driver with that stuff!

You will find that 50 rounds is nothing with that rifle. My son and I easily burn up 200 rounds or more every time we go out with his M44 and my 91/30.

As for a scope, there are many scope mounts that will connect right to the rear sight mounting and then you can mount and scope you want. Like mentioned above, a Scout scope will work best so that you don't have to modify the bolt.
