Hey everyone.

It has been a while since I've posted on here. I just bought a new Mossberg 500 12 gauge pump. I brought it home, and just attached the barrel to the receiver. However, I hear a rattling noise and movement when I point the gun up then down. I know it is the plug, the wooden dowel, but is it suppose to make that much noise, rattle, and move around that much? Is this normal? This is my first Mossberg, so I am a greenhorn to the 500 pump. It is kinda annoying, but if the shotgun functions that is all I care about really. I can live with it, I suppose. Thanks in advance.

BTW, I am using this for doves and quail, so I have no desire to remove the plug. Thanks again!

Yeah it's the plug rattling back and forth. I wrapped mine in cloth tape or electrical tape and it will dampen the vibrations in the magazine tube.

The plug is rattling around???
Shouldn't be in free play. Should be snug enough so that it doesn't rattle around. Mine never rattled or made any sounds at all.
It's really just a dowel be it wood or plastic. So if the one in place is too short, thus allowing some slapping around to take place resulting in noise. Replace it with another that's a tad longer. I wouldn't want a SG rattling around espically if it's 3:00AM and I'm hunkered down because some stranger is roaming through my living room looking for something to steal. Or I'f I'm hunting either for that matter. Why warn what you're looking to possibly shoot?

i just bough ta new 12 gauge maverick 88 series shotgun and the first thing i realized 2 days ago is that the plug slides up and down , i can hear it tremendously and i was sure something was wrong , but i contacted mosberg and they tell me it is normal to do that so i guess you can worry no more its all noormal

local regulations and his determined use may dictate he keeps the plug in.

the suggestion about wrapping it in electrical tape is as good as any in my opinion but check it after every use to make sure pieces of tape dont come off and gum up your tube. if it is an hd gun take it out.

Yes. This shotty will be primarily for hunting birds, so 3 shells is the law. I might buy a home defense barrel though in the future.

Stupid question #2? How do you take the plug out? :)

usually you can take the barrel off and tap the stock while holding it upside down and it will work it's way out...

try that first. report back if it doesn't work. The alternative is more time and tool intensive.

so :

open the action half way, unscrew the barrel. turn upside down like you'd be pointing the gun at the ground and tap the buttstock. It should work itself out.

Solution #2 would be to take the barrel off, and unscrew the magazine tube and take it out.

But I'm pretty sure just shaking it out will work.

Try the hockey tape method and it will rattle less.

I wouldn't want the plug in there to rattle if I was using to at 3 AM for home defense, take it out and fill that space with 3 more shells if you are using it for HD.

Yeah, you can just put the plug back in when you go hunting, takes less than 30 seconds.

Mine has an O-ring type deal that keeps it from making noise. I can't remember if the original did or not. The original wooden plug had gotten so rotten that it turned into mush inside of the tube. Missed a few birds trying to find a stick to jam in there to be legal. The stick did just fine until I got home and made a new one. I took the closest size dowell and drenched it in polyurethane, then found a few O-rings to keep it secured inside the tube.

I just take the barrel off and shake it out. I do remember having to load shells into the tube to coax that stick out.

Yeah the 2 O-rings help it snag onto the mag spring so it doesn't slide around.

My 500 is for H/D so I took it out.
I just unscrewed the cap of the magazine tube and it fell out. 10 seconds.
It's a dowel with a couple of O-rings to keep the dowel centered in the tube.

Then I read the instructions from Mossberg about removing the barrel and I thought ???

I have had to use a pin to center the dowel w/the gun pointed to the ground to center it so it would fall out. Nowadays the o-rings might prevent this -- if so, the o-ring near the muzzle should be repositioned and secured (cuts in the dowel) to allow it to at least fall out with access to grab and pull all the way out...

I haven't checked the shotgun since yesterday, but I don't know if the dowel has O rings or not? I remember turning the receiver upside down, and a dowel poked out of the magazine tube. About a quarter of the dowel was exposed from the magazine tube end, and it stopped. I guess I will pull it out to investigate. I assume if I get O rings on the dowel it will be easy to shove the plug with the O rings through that little magazine tube hole?

The dowel won't rattle when the magazine is fully loaded. You can remove the magazine tube (it screws in/out of the receiver) Catch the follower and spring as the tube comes off. Cut a length of PVCP pipe the same length as the original dowel and chamfer the ends so it won't snag on the spring. Use a piece just small enough in diameter to fit inside the mag spring and reassemble. It will still rattle but not nearly as noticably. FWIW,if a green stick is used in an emegency hunting situation remove it as soon as possible. It WILL ruin the mag spring if left for an extended period of time.

It's just a length of wooden dowel with a couple of o-rings on it. A certain amount of rattling is normal.

Take it out and bevel the ends. Otherwise it is possible for the flat ends to get hung up in the magazine spring. I had this happen to me once and it turned my turkey gun into a single shot. Fortunately, the turkey was already down.

I keep my dowels in a gun cabinet so they will not get lost. That way the shooter doubles as a HD and a hunter. Not much will unnerve someone as to hear a pump ratchet in the dark.

Mine didn't have any o-rings on it, and yeah, I had no clue about it and ended up disassembling my whole gun trying to figure out what the damn rattle was.

I always used the rattle test to make sure the plug was still in the magazine before I headed to the dove fields. It was very reassuring to hear that rattle when the game warden was approaching!

HAHA. Jimmy! I hear ya? I remember the wardens coming by when we were out in the fields!
