I just fixed my uncles mossberg 500 which he had sitting in his closet for the last 5 years "a Mossberg 500ab" the one with the factory jeweled bolt, shell carrier etc.etc. It was put away because he said it never worked right...he'd load one round in the chamber then 2 in the mag... after shooting the first and pumping the action both shells would try to come out of the mag tube at once....... I found the problem pretty damn quickly, It had the factory installed wooden dowel plug still in the tube... I pulled that out since it was shattered in there btw with frayed ends and had the spring all twisted up... now it works fine.

My question is, don't you only need that in there for duck/migratory bird hunting ? all he ever uses his shotguns for is target shooting, plinkin, pest control and maybe deer "mostly uses a bow or rifle for deer".

Unless there is some state hunting regulation about having guns unable to accept more than 3 rounds, I see no reason why he couldn't remove the plug for plinking, self defense, and even deer hunting (unless prohibited by state hunting regs).

Actually I think it is a Federal deal. If you are hunting Migratory Game Birds, i.e. duck, goose, dove, pheasants (I think), and numbers of others, Federal Law mandates a capacity of no more than 3 rounds. Just check with the Wildlife department in your state.

If he is not hunting birds, then it is not an issue. However, if he were rabbit hunting during dove season, and a game warden stopped him...well just depends on the warden.

Really, for anything other than an hd application, I have never found more than 2 sometimes 3 rounds to be of any real benefit.

In my state the magazine limiting plug is required for water fowl hunting only.

Not required for any usage except that. You state may vary, so check your local laws.

well I allready checked various websites like Lousiana wildlife/fisheries and they only mention it for migratory birds and fowl. I just wanted to make sure. when/if he does hunt it's always on his own propety or the neighbors with permission.

federally designated migratory birds require the plug - waterfowl, doves, and the like - if he's not hunting them, as others have said, take it out

Other than for Ducks/Geese the plug serves a purpose at the local shooting club. The club rules state that a plug is to be used at all times.

FEDERAL law..only 3 shots for waterfowl (ducks-n-geese), dove, and maybe pheasant (??)

SOME states/wildlife management areas also require 3 shots max. Ohio modern long-gun deer hunting is shotgun/slug only, 3 rounds max.

So, have a chat with your local "Game-n-Fish" guys before venturing out with an un-plugged shotgun.

In the Louisiana hunting regs - under General provisions.

Methods of taking resident game birds and quadrapeds:

Shotguns larger than 10 Ga. or capable of holding more than 3 shells shall be prohibited. Plugs used in shotguns must be incapable of being removed without disassembly

Been this way all my life

When I bought my Mossberg 500, and found something like a soft wood dowel in it, I was surprised also. It just seemed....cheap. If they're puttin it in my gun, they could at least make it of hard plastic. Sheesh!

(Guess I'm picky!):what:
