I have long sought to find a shorter vent rib barrel to my 870, than the standard fare offered. To me the 28" that it came with or the 26"ers, just
seemed to long for me to comfortable swing. Except for deer barrels, no one
seems interested in making shorter vent rib barrel for the Remington. Well
I was just into an older Mom and Pop sporting goods store in Atlantic highlands NJ, and I found one. It's a 21" ventrib fixed choke (modified)
new barrel (old stock). Well let me tell you the box looked like it had sat there
since the late fifties early sixties, though the barrel was in great shape. Needless to say after they cut me a deal on it. It went home with me.
My question is how old is it when was the last time Remington made
21" ventribs with fixed chokes for their 870's. The box is stamped model:870
Gauge:12 Bbl. Lght: 21 Choke:modified Type: vent rib NO.4552.

Anyone have any ideas?

Also Aside from the usual markings the barrel has cf 2 stamped on the outside
just under the chamber.

ummm....okay...well that was stupid

of me. Seems I just made a costly mistake. The barrel I bought doesnt
fit my 870. The mag tube is to long seems as if the barrel was made for
a 870 with a shorter tube. If they don't take the barrel back, can a gunsmith
move the barrel nut forward so it'll fit my gun?

Sounds like one of the barrels made for the Special Field variants. These do not interchange with standard barrels.

The SFs are sought after, and betcha you can find a buyer on E bay or something.

I doubt any smith would/could move the lug for less than the value of the gun.

Try the mail order places, I believe the 21" Remchoked Turkey barrel is available.
