I was at one of our local ranges/gun shop yesterday, shooting Maverick223's November Rimfire Match (THR member) and saw this really nice, older Taurus model 85, stainless steel concealed hammer, DAO 2" .38 revolver with some really pretty original Taurus wood grips on it.
Asked to see it and on examination, it was in really fine condition, no turn ring on the cylinder, no powder burn rings on the chambers and the bore looked unfired. Tried the action and it was heavy but smooth (normal for a small frame DAO). Asked if I could shoot it as I was considering buying it and I had my Charter Arms "Undercover" with me so I had a couple of 5 round speed loaders worth of my carry ammo in my pocket. They said "sure" so I tried it out. Shot to point of aim @ 20 yards and I got a 2-2.5" group with it.
Jokingly told my friend behind the counter that I'd trade him my (newer) Charter Undercover even across the board for it. Much to my surprise he took the deal. Found out about 10 minutes later that some young gal had called saying she was coming in to buy it for her boyfriend but was told her boyfriend would have to come in and fill out the paperwork otherwise it would be a "straw purchase" and as such would be illegal. She hung up.
I filled out the 4473 and did the swap. Just then she showed up and when she found out I had "bought" that revolver, she called her boyfriend who then called back very angry. He was informed that she had been told the sale could not have been done unless HE had come in and he cursed at the people for not doing the deal for her anyway and slammed the phone down. Dunno about some people.
I have no idea what kind of wood Taurus made these grips out of, but they feel good in the hand and look nice as well. I ran the serial # through Taurus' website and found out that it's a model 2-850129 and was made in 1991.
