"said P. Edwin Compass, the superintendent of police. "Only law enforcement are allowed to have weapons," he said."

"But that order apparently does not apply to the hundreds of security guards whom businesses and some wealthy individuals have hired to protect their property. "

I can't even add my own comments without getting banned.

New Orleans Begins Confiscating Firearms as Water Recedes

By ALEX BERENSON and TIMOTHY WILLIAMS
September 8, 2005
The New York Times

NEW ORLEANS, Sept. 8 - Waters were receding across this flood-beaten city today as police officers began confiscating weapons, including legally registered firearms, from civilians in preparation for a mass forced evacuation of the residents still living here.

No civilians in New Orleans will be allowed to carry pistols, shotguns, or other firearms, said P. Edwin Compass, the superintendent of police. "Only law enforcement are allowed to have weapons," he said.

But that order apparently does not apply to the hundreds of security guards whom businesses and some wealthy individuals have hired to protect their property. The guards, who are civilians working for private security firms like Blackwater, are openly carrying M-16's and other assault rifles. Mr. Compass said he was aware of the private guards, but that the police had no plans to make them give up their weapons.

Now I'm getting PO'd!

To put it bluntly, NOPD is vile.

HMM, seize guns, in america, where are all the LEO's who are supposed to walk away when this happens. This is just not right, on so many levels. We are not citizens, we are subjects.

I can.
The city's Police Department and federal law enforcement officers from agencies like the United States Marshals Service will lead the evacuation, Mr. Compass said. Officers will search houses in both dry and flooded neighborhoods, and no one will be allowed to stay, he said.
A pox apon Mr. Compass and all who carry out his orders. :fire: :cuss:

These are the kind of people my sig covers.

Uh oh.
including legally registered firearms
Why should citizens be forced to give up their arms in order to be evacuated? No, this is not right, this is disturbing, this is downright deeply troubling ...

Welcome to the New America.

Maybe they should hire Saddam. He was able to pacify Iraq, and he's out of work right now I hear.

I'd probly already be gone from the area, since I have a car and nothing worth dying for besides my guns, but if for whatever reason I was still there I would tell them, from what went on, that they can take my gun, but they will take him out in a body bag.

Lets see how many disarmed citizens get killed because of this. I for one seriously believe that I would be able to pull the trigger in that situation. (None of us know until we have to.) Do they have any LEGAL authority to do this???

I'm wondering the same thing. AFAIK, there was (now) no declaration of martial law, so ... this should be interesting, to say the least.

I imagine the NOPD and whatever other JBTs are roaming the streets of NOLA would oblige.

I'm willing to bet there will be a dozen tiny Wacos that we'll never hear about.

:fire:

This is a dark day for America.

I would doubt very seriously if we ever hear of any resistance to this policy by legally owned firearms owners, on their own property.

As an LEO and an American citizen

I am appalled by the utter disregard for the Constitution displayed by some of the authorities acting in NOLA. Nagin and his trained idiot Compass have NO regard for the rights we cherish in this country and Nagin in particular seems bound and determined to force a state of dependency upon everyone. This is absurd: People who carefully prepared for a doomsday scenario, armed themselves, stored food, water, fuel, and generators are RIGHT NOW, in the midst of chaos, surviving independently of government help. NAGIN has declared this to be unacceptable. He is dispatching armed officers to disarm these people, force them from their homes, strip them of their independence, and ram them straight into Nanny Government's loving bosom.

Nagin and all who carry out his despotic orders should be prosecuted and sued. :fire:

Right ... we'll never hear about it. There will just be people found by the authorities to have mysteriously expired in areas where the flood waters never rose.

maybe they'll blame looters ... maybe they'll burn their house and claim they must have died in the fires.

Either way, I expect the "authorities" there will murder people and get away with it.

Wait, what about the officers having a "crisis of conscience" and refusing to comply with orders to disarm law-abiding average citizens whose guns are legally registered?

Wasn't that what was supposed to happen?

Why does this forum always have to be right?

Is it because it always expects the worst aspects of humanity?

P.S., while I empathize with the rich, and one day plan to be so myself, it bugs the heck out of me that there are 2 sets of laws, depending on net worth.

P.P.S.
Isn't a man trying to take your firearms away a criminal committing assault and battery? You know he's not law-abiing because the 2nd makes that clear. So you've got a criminal in your house attacking you.

I'm awfully confused. All this time I thought America had a Constitution. I suppose I need to stay more educated on such things.

Note how this is not the case in the affected areas in Mississippi or Alabama.

What was that bit about "ensuring republican government,"...oh yes;
The United States shall guarantee to every State in this Union a Republican Form of Government, and shall protect each of them against Invasion; and on Application of the Legislature, or of the Executive (when the Legislature cannot be convened) against domestic Violence.

I think the action needed is clear.
