I resently baught the Taurus MIL PT145. Works great. Is there anyone that has any advice like best ammo or anyother good tips for this firearm that could be helpful?? thanks alot!

My friend has had great results with the Taurus All Copper ammo, only drawback is it's roughly 75 cents to a dollar per round when you can find it...

bbender83,
Welcome to this board.

The best "tip" anyone can offer you is that you should now spend money and time on training with your pistol. Going through professional training (2 day introduction to handguns course is a good start) will do more for you than any bullet or accessory, or just rangetime by itself.

I shoot 230gr. Federal HydraShoks in mine. They are extremely accurate and recoil in not hard to handle at all. I practice with 230gr. MagTec FMJ's that just happen to shoot to the same point of aim as the HydraShoks. I made some very informal gelatin tests using baggies filled with cherry jello, formed into 4" thick by 8" x 8" squares, stacked in front of each other, and a 3/4" plywood backing. Expansion was excellent in all but one of the 3 rounds I fired and they penetrated about 18" when shot from 15'. I even shot one with the blocks covered with two layers of denim and that one expanded nicely. Needless to say I feel very comfortable shooting this load in my PT-145Mil Pro.

If the PT145 is anything like my PT92 it will shoot whatever you put into it. I preferred the Blazer aluminum cased for practice until I started reloading. Check the military surplus stores for ammo deals.

Have you considered also reloading? It's a great hobby to compliment shooting! You can get started for less than $150.00

I was also looking at the Pt145, however, I was concerned about .45ACP rounds not having enough time to accelerate in the short 3inch barrel. 45 powder is a slow burning powder and needs more barrel length to get up to speed. Has anyone found that a shorter barrel is a huge detriment to expansion and penetration in real ballistic gelatin?

It's a nice pistol. I own one. However, it's currently down hard. I shot +P ammo out of it. DON'T DO THAT in this pistol. It actually caused the recoil spring to compress and flatten out near the tip of the guide spring rod and to actually start coming out of the hole that's normally plugged by the tip of the guidespring rod. A phonecall to Taurus stated that the gun is not rated for +P ammo. Whoops... :banghead:

You will definitely experience reduced velocity because of the shorter barrel, I carry and fire Winchester 185grain JHP Silvertips. It's a pleasant load that gets more "oomph" out of the short barrel than the 230 grain loads do. The Short Barrel load that Speer puts out shows some promise, but I have never fired it out of this handgun.

Other than the user operated error, I haven't had any problems with this gun.

The second generation DAO is my actual carry gun. I love it. My advice: find out what ammo your weapon likes. Mine, for instance, does not like Winchester "white box" which I have used for practice. Apparently the primers were too hard and I had light strikes. My friend's PT145 had no problems with it whatsoever. As for carry ammo: I use the Corbon DPX. They do expand every time out of this short barrelled pocket cannon and my gun loves them! Deep penetrating too...low recoil for quick follow-up shots. I love this auto!

Mil Pro

Congrats on the new purchase, I think Taurus handguns are an exceptional value right now. I own the PT-111 Mil Pro, it is my carry gun most of the time. I have not had any problem with it.
For ammo I am not sure I would use +P on a regular basis, I am not sure why Taurus told tinygnat219 that the PT-145 is not rated for +P, check out http://www.taurustactical.com/template_images/taurusTacticalManual07.pdf page 3 indicates all Taurus handguns are rated for +P. I personally feel that in such a small .45 you would be better off not shooting the +P unless you a well above average shooter, just due to the recoil and the ability for follow up shots, Just me. Your shooting a .45 not a .380 so you most likely won't be underpowered, not to mention you have 10+1 capacity.
I like Gold Dot 185 gr. for my XD45 compact, and I also use Gold Dot in my Mil Pro. For the best prices on Gold Dot check out https://s13711.gridserver.com/?osCsid=039605e9e87428734612436f3b9e5e45 you can also get the short barrel ammo, but it comes in a smaller box 20 rds where the regular comes in boxes of 50 rds. Don't tell too many people about the good price they might raise them.

On the +P issue... Taurus is very ambiguous on this one. The maximum ammo that they recommend is a 225 gr round at 900 fps, I believe. That's one hell of a round in a 3.27" barrel, though... it's uncertain to me whether they mean that it will not excede that in this weapon since they use it generically. And that's a pretty lame legal manuver by cutting it off at 225 grains when most .45 ammo is 230 grains.

And the PT145 I have is a Millenium, not a Millenium Pro. The one I have is decidedly not rated for +P ammo, I think it has a problem not from pressure but from the force of the recoil on the frame. I haven't had any problems but I don't shoot it very often. Winchester whitebox is all it has received in it's lifetime, either 230 FMJ or JHP.

Luckily, I haven't had any problems with this gun, but I don't think I'd get another one. The trigger still requires huge amounts of force to operate and hasn't loosened up much.

SWC Bonfire: The newer Millennium Pros, both 2nd and 3rd generation made huge leaps in the trigger department. My second generation DAO trigger is just "buttah"! I wish my revolver's had this kind of smooth trigger action!:D
So...please do not use the first generation (research & development) stop you from purchasing the newer ones.:D
