All this discussion about 5.45x39, coupled with my recent purchase of an AK 74 got me thinking about a 5.45 bolt gun. I once owned one of the East German SSG82s, but sold it because ammo was difficult to obtain. I wish I had that rifle right now.

Anyway, I picked up a 223 CZ-527 this morning for an exceptional price. The wood is decent, but the barrel is in bad shape. The owner had it in a closet with a leak and it rusted badly. The receiver has some rust as well, but not too bad. Some pitting but serviceable.

I love these rifles and am always up for a project, so I am thinking this is a perfect opportunity to build a 5.45 truck gun.

Looking for input from THR.

I am planning on a 16 or 18 inch bbl to fit with the carbine idea. I'll probably opt for a low power scope, although I've been thinking about a Rigby style cocking piece mounted peep sight for the CZ.

Thoughts on twist rate? I have the option of 1:7, 1:8, 1:9 or 1:10

Waiting to hear on reamer.

Arg, talked to my barrel guys and he says 5.45 barrel production is still in planning stage. The good news is that Pac-Nor also has 5.45 barrels in 1:7.7 and 1:10. Lothar Walther catalogs a 1:10 only.
