STUART — A proposed private country club for gun shooters west of Palm City got the go ahead from Martin County commissioners today.

Commissioners voted 4-0, with Commissioner Susan Valliere absent, to rezone about 600 acres of agricultural land to allow developers to build the 44-acre South Florida Shooting Grounds off County Road 714 west of Interstate 95.

The project is being developed by Martin County resident Doug Vine and Mark Simpson, the owner of the Palm Beach Motorcars car dealership in Palm Beach County, said Mark Paules, the planner representing the developers.

Vine has previously said that the club will include a 7,000-square-foot clubhouse and will charge members $2,000 to $5,000 for the right to shoot there. Paules said that the club is proposed to have trap and skeet shooting.

Paules said the developers decided to build in the middle of the 600-acre parcel to avoid any conflicts with neighbors.

The club is already getting dozens of inquiries from residents, including residents of the wealthy communities of Jupiter Island and Town of Palm Beach, who want to become members.

"We,re already getting booked," Paules said, who added that a private company has been hired to mine the lead bullets out of the ground to be recycled.
