I recently picked up a nice used 1911 compact from a forum member. The only thing I didn't like was the Novak rear sight. I have Heinies or Bomars on all my 1911's and Hi Powers and I just can't get used to the 3-dot Novak.

Rather than replacing both front and rear sights with Heinies, I found that www.sdmfabricating.com is making a drop-in replacement for the Novak that is 40 LPI serrated. I decided to try it. I selected the U-notch model.

Installation was super easy on my Springfield Compact Loaded. I just loosened the set screw on the factory Novak sight and tapped it out with a nylon punch and small hammer. Then I put in the SDM, tapped it in, got it centered and put in the set screw and snugged it down.

The sight picture is SO MUCH BETTER than the factory 2-dot Novak. It looks a lot more like a Heinie or a Bomar from the rear. And the notch is nice and deep too, so you really get a good clean picture of the front sight.

I took it to the range today and tried it out. My accuracy improved a little, but my speed improved a lot! It really helps me get a good, fast sight picture. And no change at all to POI with with the Novak front sight.

Kudos to Scott and SDM!

The rear of the sight is flat and slanted, unlike the dished-out look of the Novak. And the notch is deeper too.

For my eyes, the flat plane of this rear sight is far superior to the Novak.
