I was forced to sell my Winchester M70, and Remington M700 to pay a divorce attorney, a cruddy but very common occurrence these days. I hunted deer with whatever I could beg or borrow for the last couple years, but I was determined to find something to call my own this year.
A close friend of mine had a Savage M111 chambered for 30-06 in the corner that his ex wife bought him as a Christmas gift shortly before they split in 2009. He was complaining that she knew exactly what he wanted, but came home with "that thing". I asked him why he disliked it, and he said it's too big and kicks too hard. My friend is a very small man, he is 5'1'' and weighs about 120lbs. He prefers youth model guns and loves .243 for it's light recoil. A full sized aught six beats him up pretty good.
He claims he put less than a box of shells through it before he stuck it in the corner and went back to his battered and rusty .243.
He said $200 and she's yours... I dug through my billfold and produced $180... He called it close enough and I am now a Savage owner! I am already surprised with the quality of this gun. For a budget priced rifle, it sure looks like it offers a ton of value. The trigger is adjustable and feels pretty good, the finish looks great, and it fits me like a glove.
Now I just hope it will group well. For $180, It just needs to shoot minute of deer and I will be happy
It is nice to know I won't be borrowing a gun this year. It may just be a cheapo rifle, but it has special meaning to me. It feels like I am starting to get things together again after that stupid divorce. I think this rifle and I will get along just fine.
