Hello,
Probably picking a Winchester Model 70 Featherweight in 30-06. Price is well up there for my budget but...... Looking for inexpensive scope and mounts. Will be replaced at a later date. Saw a thread on the Burris Fullfield II at a good discount. Now considering mountng with the Talley scope ring/mount bases. Advised to get a medium, extended 1" set. Concerns about the tube length and getting the proper eye relief.
Looking for some expert advice on the choice and the particulars if anyone would please help.
Thanks

Howdy CoalCrackerAl,
Thanks for responding. The rifle comes with no mounts whatsoever. Personally wanted a two piece mounting system. The Talley brand offers different heights and extensions. I was advised that the tube length available on that scope seemed limited and it would not allow enough movement horizontally to get the eye relief I might need on the scope. The mounts I've found are well regarded but not inexpensive. Plus to change in the future to a 30mm tubed scope requires a new mount set. Certainly not an immediate worry, though.

For hunting rifles I'm a huge fan of the Talley LT Weight mounts. I just put another set on a Rem 700 in 300WM that I bought a Leupold VX6HD 3-18x50 because the objective was too tall for the existing medium rings. The Talley extended mounts, can be flipped wither way to compensate some for your scope tube length and may get you the eye relief you need. That's the route I had to take with this last set.

I ordered my last set directly from Talley and had them in 4 days.

Sounds like a strong positive recommendation. Glad to hear it. If it can handle the .300WM, won't be a problem on a 30-06.
Thanks

I have this one coming. It's going on the gun above. I have the same scope on my other 17HMR.

Looks like you read my mind. Have you had good experiences buying optics from ebay? The 3-9X40mm is $109 on the amazon. Chose the scope more about price and reputed quality rather than for the magnification and variablility. Thinking even lower power if I can get it 1-6, 2-7.... Guess I will have to look around ebay!!
Thanks

This is just me, but I won't buy optics from Ebay...

Due to some of the counterfeiting issues I've read about, I'll only buy optics from online retailers I've done business with before. When it comes to Leupolds I get one heck of a discount, either my Veteran's or .Gov employee, so I normally go direct to them.

I do feel leary, thats the reason I asked. Believe the Burris will do for now. No such discounts for me, didn't earn them. Do want a Leupold... maybe eventually!!

Your welcome. I found that deal through Capital one. They send me notices when they find a good price on what i like. The scope that is on the RAR now. Came from ebay too. 50 bucks it's just a Centerpoint. My local walmart wanted a 100.00 for it,

I've bought optics from eBay, but I won't buy from random people when it comes to optics. Quite a few reputable stores have ebay listing as well, and that's where I usually go for mine. That's how I got my first Fullfield E1. Probably less to worry about with counterfeiting with Burris. Leupold you do really have to watch out, though.

I also qualify for alot of government employee discounts, and they're pretty good. Used it to get an awesome price on my Leupold binos, but the price of Burris Fullfields right now is pretty amazing.

Don't know if this is the right place to ask... The screw sizes for the current Model 70 long action scope mount are 6-48??

Hey rhtwist, I had a Burris FF II 4.5-14X42 on a Rem 700 .270. Optics were good and it held zero very well and accounted for a very nice whitetail before I sold both gun and scope. I disliked the adjustment screws (needed a coin to turn the screw) and the rubber ring on the rear adjustment was cheap crap that came off repeatedly until I super-glued it. For the money, it was useful and did the job, but I would never buy another.

Hello and thanks for the information Sniper66! I was looking for something reputedly well built and as it was IIRC $109 online(inexpensive but not cheap) I wanted to give it a try on my new rifle. The appearance and apparent build quality seem very good. Unfortunately the new rifle is on its way back to the manufacturer, prior to mounting the scope and ring/mounts.Glad you confirmed the usability of it. I am not looking for long range dialing or such yet or for a while :)-(!

At one time I considered the Burris FF-II in 3-9X40 only to be at least as good as a Leupold VX-2. That scope is being phased out and if current production is as good as they used to be it is a pretty darn good scope for the money. Especially at the discounted prices I'm seeing. That was ONLY the 3-9X40 version. Some of the FF-II scopes in other magnification ranges less so.

On that rifle I'd go with Talley Lightweights. On most rifles that is my go-to mount. I also like Burris Zee rings if using cross slot Weaver style or Picatinney rail bases.

The Sig Zees are my go-tos along with Warne vertical split rings. I'm not a big spender on optics or mounts generally, so I'm a big bang for the buck guy. Hard to beat those without spending ALOT more.

Talley advised me on which set to purchase, using the Burris scope. I want to have good mounts in case I need to upgrade the scope.
Thanks

Appreciated Sniper66, I have already purchased the Talleys. From all accounts they are well made and reputedly have great customer service!
