new Ruger 22/45 lite

The wifey just picked one up this weekend. It's gonna be a few weeks before we get some range time but I field stripped it and cleaned the gook out of it, So far i'm pretty impressed. What drew her to it was the weight, I have a mkII and it was "too heavy" for her. She handled a series of other 22 autoloaders and settled on this one, and it's significantly lighter than my old MKII. Overall the fit is nice, I like the laminated grips, as does she. The aspect that struck me is that's significantly easier to disassemble and reassemble than my stainless mkII. The adjustable sights are a nice touch.
It looks nice feels right, in a bit we'll find out how good of a shooter she is, anything I need to look out for with it? My mkII will cycle absolutely any ammo I run through it, I expect the same from this one.

About the only thing I can think of, are the popular modifications. Dump the mag disconnect, and do the "slingshot" mod. Smooth up the channel where the magazine load button runs up in the magazine(in the mag, not the grip). If you shoot it without a muzzle accessory, dont lose the washer that is under the thread protector. It helps keep the thread protector tight. If you do use a compensator, or suppressor, remove the washer, but then put it back on when using the thread protector.

The trigger, new out of the box, is heavier than the older Mark pistols. I used the Majestic Arms 3.2 Speed Strip kit in my 2 LITEs. The reason is it comes with a better hammer, resulting in a lighter trigger, and the mag disconnect removal bushing. Its a good deal for $60, AND you get the benefit of the speed strip.

TANDEMKROSS has a +1 magazine base that makes seating the magazine much easier.

Weblance's take on it is spot on.

I added a hogue grip to mine with the finger grooves and really like it, the laminated grips were too thin for my liking. I also purchased 3 additional mags and added 5 of the tandemkross +1 magazine bases to all my magazines. It does make it a lot easier to put pressure on the bottom of the magazine when seating them, and the additional round is an added plus. I eliminated the magazine disconnect and added the bushing from tandemkross, so now I can fire without a magazine in and my magazines drop free really well too. I took out the rear sight on mine and added a dovetail mount in the existing sight dovetail and it holds a burris fastfire III reflex sight. I love this addition as it is really low to the barrel and adds a lot of precision and speed to the shooting.

The next few items I plan on for this is to add the slingshot mod and maybe a lighter trigger from volquertson or something the like down the road. I might have to consider Weblance's trigger he had put on his, that's significantly less than volquertson's trigger kit. Eventually, I would like to get a 22Sparrow can for it, as it could be shared between the 22/45 lite and my S&W M&P 15-22, but have to find $200 to give to the government first.

I'm sure your wife will love it, it is a lot of fun to shoot and very upgradeable.

First day with it at the range yesterday, it was the wifeys first experience with firearms, and she enjoyed her new Ruger. No time flat she got it down, for her it is a very easy and intuitive handgun. The only issue we had is the front blade kept coming loose. Little action with the screw driver and it was cured. After a bit of adjusting the rear sight I could make about a hand sized pattern at 25yds with it. Overall very pleased, Very easy to use Safe, accurate handgun. Could the trigger be a bit better, yes. If she doesn't like the trigger after a few thousand rounds ill mess with it then For now she loves it.

Yesterday a couple female shooting friends were talking about the gun. It seems a lot of the ladies are getting rid of their heavier 22 (target) pistols in favor of the new Ruger lite.

If the gun has the same lawyer "safety" crap as the MKIII then I'm not interested.
My MKIII is the worst Ruger I've owned and I have a lot of Rugers.

Magazine disconnect prevents the pistol from being fired with the magazine removed from the pistol.

Internal safety lock has been added.


I've continuously owned several Ruger MKI and MKII (22/45) since my first MKI in1961 (which I still have).
No doubt, one of the best guns ever made.


A few years ago I bought a Ruger bull barrel MKIII 22/45.
The gun seldom got through a magazine without jamming (4 different magazines).
Finally I removed all the "safety crap". Now it jams just once in a while, so I don't cuss it too much anymore.

It's OK for a range gun teaching new shooters, as the jams give them practice clearing malfunctions.



Now the one thing I really like about the MKIII is the rail.
I had to install a rail on my old Ruger to use it as a low light/dark laser practice gun. It also doubles as a after dark checking the place and critter gun.
I would hope Ruger is including a rail with the new gun.
