So a few months back I got a new Ruger BlackHawk CarryHawk .45LC/.45 ACP, and had a few issues with it right out of the box that are now resolved, so here's that thread if you want to see it.

Then I made some custom grips out of an Alternative Ivory material that I really liked. Here's that thread.

Now finally I have swapped out the rear V-Notch sight blade for a standard white outline notch sight blade to go with the Hi-Viz Green Fiber Optic front sight I did some time ago, and I'm pretty sure I'm done fiddling around with it. As mentioned in my first issues thread, the front sight block mount assembly is canted a bit, and that made the front sight look really angled using the factory V-Notch rear sight blade. Now with the standard type notch blade I just replaced it with, it is only minutely noticeable and mostly just because I know it is a little canted, but otherwise it looks way straighter than with the V blade. I also laser bore sighted it in and no issue with rear sight centered to front blade being straight down the barrel centered. When I get a chance to shoot it, that'll be the real proof, but having had this similar issue on another revolver some time back, (while annoying) it shot straight as an arrow to the sights.

So here's some final pics of it, and I'm glad to be done messing with it... for now anyway.

Thanks Oburation my friend, and in all honesty my next/current project is fixing the herniated disk in my neck compressing my radial arm nerve. I got the epidural cervical spinal shot last week, and just started PT yesterday. I get put on a traction machine 4 times a week for a couple weeks, and all kinds of painful exercises to do at home, so that's hopefully gonna get that mod started..

But... when I do get feeling a bit better you gotta know I'll find some gun or knife project to do, and more than likely another set of grips for my other little Bauer .25 or something like that.
You thinking on any project to do?

That's got to be rough, hope you get some relief soon.

Yeah, I have a couple I want to do. In all honesty, I'm fairly good at working with metal, things that can't be welded back together or bent to my will do give me some trouble at times. Two projects I would like to do are: build an ammo "armoire " , something large and robust that I can organize my pile a little better. The other I've mentioned to you before, a set of grips for my freedom arms revolver, I seriously considered sending the gun off to rowen for some grips but they start at $600+ , not sure if You're familiar with freedom arms but there are no off the shelf grips, every grip frame is individual and so there's no way to just get some and trim a little to fit. It currently has pachmayer grips from the factory but the gun was made in 1987- 2 weeks after my 3rd birthday. The grips are terribly deformed ,hard as a rock & UGLY.

So I do think I'll have a try at making some- nothing to lose . my wife nearly fell over when I mentioned the cost of custom grips. Now with the current health crisis the world is on hold and I may have time to do it (or try to). I just want to do it right, I'll likely never get another gun as nice as this Freedom arms - got a very good deal on it back in January.

I think I'll try some wood, I'm just not sure what type is best. this may be more than I can accomplish but we'll see I guess.

Thanks again for sharing!

@Viper1357 and @CraigC do you fellas have any intention of actually carrying your Carry Hawk? Just curious because the thought of carrying a S/A has crossed my mind since most of my shooting is done with S/A revolvers.

Hopefully Craig will pipe in as after following his threads on his CarryHawk I believe his mods were very purposeful to his planning to carry or hunt with it.

Me on the other hand, no plan to carry for personal self defense against potential perps. But, I do plan to carry it for deep backwoods hikes and as a backup during hunting, fishing and the like.

The main reason I went with this exact model is that I had recently fell in love (again) with SA revolvers, and more especially birdshead type/styled grip frames. Then with all the .45 LC revolvers I own this is the only one that can handle full house Ruger loads should I want to use them. Finally the .45 ACP convertibility is the icing on the cake with it for range fun.

Here's a holster I found (had to work it quite a bit though) for when I do carry it.

Not trying to pick on the OP's revolver (or Craig's either) but I have to wonder what Ruger was thinking when they designed this gun. Why on earth grind/mill the flats on the barrel sides...and leave the cylinder un-fluted? For a "carry" gun wouldn't weight reduction every chance you had be a good thing?

Dave

I've all but decided to send mine to Jack Huntington to have it converted to a Bisley with an aluminum aftermarket grip frame, tuning, grips, front sight, etc.. Which should result in about the lightest single action I want to shoot .45Colt "Ruger only" loads in. Have no intentions of carrying it concealed. I think the New Vaquero birdshead .45ACP would be a much better option for that.

@Dave T I agree, it is curious. Whatever weight was lost by slabsiding the barrel was surely gained back with the unfluted cylinders.

As do I agree as well. They got me more for the 'odd niche' design and configuration than actual practicality of it. Another gun I was oddly drawn to. I hope it shoots well for me, because I do like it so far.
