New Ruger Mark III .22

I've been looking around for a nice little .22 plinker to have fun with. The Walther P22 is very nice but my hands are huge and it shoots like a squirt gun for me. I was looking for something a little larger and heavier.

I thought about getting a .22 LR conversion kit for my Kimber, but that seems like it could be a pain switching it out all the time. Then I looked at the Ruger Mark II and saw that they have just released a couple of new pistols, including the already discussed P-series auto and the new MarkIII series.

I asked about them at my local shop and they looked into it for me. They were able to order me up a MarkIII 512 in Stainless. It'll be in tomorrow or Tuesday. Then with my personal NICS waiting period :), I'll have it by next weekend!

Anyone have one of these yet? Any idea on the going street prices? I think they're selling this to me at a GREAT price but I was just curious.

I agree with the sentiment about the lawyer-appeasement. I DO however dig the included Weaver scope base. I've got a nice little red dot that's collecting dust that will go quite nicely there and I don't have to spend extra for a mount.

I believe they also re-radiused the ejection port. I had heard that the 22-45 had some ejection problems, but thought it was extractor-based and had not heard of any issues on the Mark IIs. I dunno if this was meant as an improvement.

Best part is, they're selling this one to me at almost 100 bucks less than the MarkII 6" blued version they have in stock currently. Like I said, I think I'm getting a hell of a deal at $253 for the 5-1/2" bull barrel in stainless. MSRP is $365.

Anyone else heard any good/bad/ugly? :)

I'm in "enemy country" here. I hope that Ruger submits one for Mass. testing to the Atty General's Regs.

I agree completely. I may not care for all the lawyer extras but for that price it seems hard to go wrong!
 
Ruger makes a Mark III ?

Man, I am so behind on the times.... :(

Guess I'll check out Ruger's website and see how it differs from my Mark II.
 
Well...Hopefully, it has all the bells and whistles for MA approval for sale!
Ruger "purists" may not like those.
 
The MarkIII pistol has been released in two flavors. One is a 22/45 and the other is an updated version of the MarkII pistol. Basically, they've added an integral lock, a magazine disconnect safety, moved the mag release button to a "normal" location, recontoured the ejection port, added a loaded chamber indicator and drilled and tapped the reciever for an included Weaver-type sight base.

I'm thinking that these added features will satisfy the MA requirements, but since I'm not an expert on them, I'm not sure. From what I can tell, they were released this month and until they told me at the shop yesterday, I had no idea they had a stainless version available. They've also released a MarkIII in .17 Mach2! (stainless with fluted bull barrel)

The model pictured is the one I'm getting, but mine's stainless.

I had to ask if they were POSITIVE about the price as it seemed REALLY low especially for a new model, but they assured me that it was correct. I'm a very good customer there and almost like family to them so that may be why they're giving me such a good deal. That's one of the reasons I posted this as I'm curious as to what others are going for on the street and just exactly how sweet IS this deal!
 
I fired the Mark II a few days ago, and I have to say I was really pleased with it. I'm probably going to pick one up for myself sooner or later, but I'm not sure which barrel to get. I like the bull barrels, but not sure about length.

Right now I'm thinking 5.5" bull in stainless. I have a thing for stainless steel. :)

Any reason I should pick up a Mark III instead of a Mark II?

I guess if they jumped through all the other hoops they probably did that too, but that's just an assumption on my part.

I always thought that to be an especially stupid thing, the "second hidden serial number". If someone's got a gun in MA, and they want to remove the serial, they're likely gonna look for a second one, knowing that it's required.

It's done what it was designed for though: kept guns out of the hands of law-abiding citizens. I don't guess the criminals have any problem getting them though. :rolleyes:

I dunno yet, that's a good question. I'll let everyone know after I shoot it.

To me a integral lock, magazine disconnect safety, and a loaded chamber indicator sound silly... Too many parts, and the best safet is in between a persons ears.

I read the article in "Shooting Times" on the Mk. III and hurried to a dealer to buy a remaining Mk. II bull bbl. I can't see that large of a loaded chamber indicator, extending so far along the left side (!?) of the gun, as is the case with the Mk. III Ruger .22.

Wow, you sure did better than me. I just bought a Ruger Mark II NRA Endowment Pistol for $295. I knew this was a little high, but they didn't have any of the Mark III except for the 22/45 which didn't feel good in my hand. They also didn't have any other Mark II's, so I ended up with the NRA gun.
