Im a bit torn. I can either buy a new Ruger P345 or get a used Sig 220 for the price of the ruger plus another 150 dollars. Would you trust a ruger as a duty weapon? I know sigs have a reputation as the best pistols on the market new or used, but I am leary of a used pistol for a duty weapon. What say you guys? PS I had a glock and am selling it, the grip just doesnt fit my hands, so glock is out of the question.

I owned a P345, very accurate, pretty light, but had pms! They like to run wet, and would get FTF jams on long range visits. Sometimes it ran without a hitch, sometimes not, it had a mind of its own! I'd be looking at the Sig, personally, between your two picks:) Another thing against the Ruger was the decock, safty design. It allows for DA engagement, which sucks because its easy to leave on, and it feels like your stretching out the trigger linkage when you try to fire it. In my view, DA mode, is enough safety, dont need a slide mounted lever too, that wont return on its own;)

Normally, I don't give Option C choices, but:

If you're leary of used weapons, you should be able to find a new Smith M&P or Springfield XD (not the "XDM") in the Sig's price range. Either of them would make excellent weapons, have great track records, stand-up service behind them, and are available in .45ACP. The XD has a 1911-style grip safety and the Smith is also available with an ambi thumb safety if you want that feature.

i recommend the Sig 220 because i prefer their trigger feel. BTW the Sig also likes to run "wet" during long strings of fire.

i have 3 220s and 2 of them were used when i got them...i think i have more pistols purchased used than new

I have no experience with the Sig.. But my P345 runs like a clock. Never a single issue with it. In fact... my "night stand" choice is the P345 over my Glock 19 or my XD 45.

Quoheleth- Just out of curiosity (not to hijack this thread) but why wouldn't you recommend the XDm?

I had problems with the 345 at the range. It would FTF because of mag placement issues, and even couldn't operate with a full 8 round mag cause it was so overused. Thats the range's gun. I bought one brand new, and it never had any problems. Ever. Takes everything including reloads and +p's. The sig is heavier but a lot. The p345 is lighter. It is really up to you. I like the 345's mag disconnect feature. Not sure how you feel about it as LEO.

I have a 345 and it runs flawlessly. As a duty weapon, I'd like more capacity then the 7 or 8 in the Ruger.

I'd rather have a used Sig than new Ruger. We are not talking economics, we taking about excellence.

I can't speak for Quoheleth, but it might have something to do with the XDm-45 not existing :).

I'd also say I would take a Sig 220 over a Ruger because I do think the Sig is an overall more reliable gun.

i had a ruger p345 and it was a very accurate gun, as a matter of fact the most accurate gun that i have ever owned. mine had some reliability issues but they were fixed, and i have since sold it. i would personally go with the sig, i trust the rep of sig's.

these are a couple of 220STs that i bought used (CPO) for about $600/each

this was my duty gun that i originally bought for <$500 new...i dressed it up a bit when i started to show wear

Two reasons: One, price tag; two, caliber

In the OP he mentions the P345 or a used Sig at $150 more - which I estimated to be in the $500 range. That's M&P or XD territory. The new XDm, from what I've seen, is in the $800 range putting it in the new Sig range.

Of course, no XDm .45ACP - which -v- already pointed out.

Guns and More is funny because he's right. Anyway, I had a P345 and never had a problem with it. It's one of those that I wish I'd held on to.

Well I Decided against the used Sig. Call me silly, but I just cant shake the bad vibe I get when thinking about relying a used gun as a duty gun. I like to break in my own guns and know exactly how they have been treated. There were a few other factors like not wanting to spend an extra hundred and fifty, plus my glock for a used gun, and 40 something ounces as opposed to 29 ounces for a gun that will be carried daily, and no warranty if your not the original owner.
As for an XD, I shot an XD .45 awhile back and hated it, I just couldnt shoot it very well. Ive also shot the ruger and loved it. I know there are a few police agencies that have issued these so I think a security guard will be just fine with one. And for the record I am open to a M&P, but I dont think that a manual safety is available in CA, and that was the one feature that I always missed with my glock.

PS I also wanted a hammer on my next gun, Double action or DA/SA plus hammer makes me feel alot more confident than striker fired. Although my glock never once let me down, it just wasnt what i wanted from a defensive pistol feature wise. Function was always flawless. :)

My last few Sig Sauers, which are New Pre-Owned condition, cost me no more than $500. dollars. I always know who buying from.
