Hey all, I finally decided to purchase my very first ruger today. I have been in the market for a standard capacity 9mm. I own a few glocks and xd's, but never a ruger...After enough research i decided on the P-95, only to find out they have been discontinued...Luckily, i call my LGS and he has two left in stock. Sticker price was $389.

I just have a few questions for you folks. When the gun is cocked and the safey is off, i noticed that when i engage the saftey the whole slide moves forward slightly....Is that normal?

Secondly, i field stripped the weapon a few times to become accustomed to the procedure. Did everything like the instructions said, but i did notice that as soon as i remove the slide from the frame my ejector that i just pushed down, suddenly pops back up again...?

Lastly, while getting use to the controls, i was working the slide and the saftey, etc (unloaded firearm) I notice the one time after i had locked the slide back, i pressed the slide release ( with my hand guiding the slide, not letting it slam) and as soon as it returned to battery the hammer dropped? Maybe i was over-looking a saftey feature?

I look forward to shooting her this weekend and I will let you guys know how it goes!- RC

Was the safety applied when you racked the slide? I don't have mine in hand at the moment but I don't think the safety locks the slide and if the safety is engaged the hammer shouldn't stay cocked when it returns to battery.

The ejector shouldn't pop back up after removing the slide though - it needs to be down when the slide is reattached. Trust me if you get that messed up the P95 can be a booger to get back together. I once it to a point where it took me a half-hour working with a dental pick to get the slide back off so I could reassemble it again.

That said, mine has been a wonderfully reliable gun. The best DA/SA gun that I have shot.

One of my P95s---the ejector pops back up every time I remove the slide--just push it back down before reassembly---no big deal.

The hammer will drop when the safety is applied----if the safety is on when you close the slide --the hammer will drop----working as advertised---again no big deal.

I can only second the above on your third question; the safety (actually, a "de-cocker" that can double as a safety) was likely in the down position when you released the slide.

The other issues you bring up I have not encountered, so I can't speak for them.

I find the P95 to be an excellent, albeit utilitarian, tool as far as handguns go. I love mine. Was issued its predecessor, the P85, back in the early nineties when I was in LE. Main difference is that the older unit has an aluminum frame instead of polymer.

I even carry my P95 at times.

Congrats on a great pistol at a great price. It'll make you happy for as many years as you allow. If you let your ego get bruised by "upgrade" guys you won't have it long. If you want a pistol that puts rounds where you want, and doesn't fail you'll be happy for a long time.

My P95 is a first year decocker only model. The ones with safeties hadn't come out yet. It wouldn't hurt to call Ruger and ask about that ejector thing. It's supposed to stay down until you raise it or more likely, put the mag in. I can't address the slide movement, but would also bring that to Rugers attention. That's why they have customer service people, and they are almost always good to talk to, too. I've never had a grump anyway. I got mine in 1996, still going strong.

Ruger is a great company to deal with in my experience.

Having said that, I think you should keep it unloaded, keep the manual handy, handle the gun a lot more in the next few days, and get back on here with any questions that surface.

It's not uncommon for the ejectors to pop up when you manipulate/remove the slide. As noted, you will need to push it back down before reassembly.

If you start with the safety applied (ON safe, lever DOWN) and manipulate the slide gently rather than pulling it back and letting it snap forward with full spring force, you can leave the gun a condition where the slide hasn't gone fully forward. In that condition, the hammer will be cocked, the safety will be ON (lever down) and the slide will be about 1/8" back from the fully forward position.

At that point, if you push the safety lever UP (safety OFF) position, the slide will jump forward into the fully forward position and the hammer will remain cocked.

For what it's worth, you should never "baby" the slide to the forward position. Pull it all the way back and let it go forward under spring pressure.

The slide should not move any significant amount when you move the safety to the ON position (lever to the down position). It might move a very tiny bit when decocking, but nothing more than a barely perceptible amount.

My P345 does the same thing: ejector pops back up as I remove the slide, hammer drops if I release the slide (with safety ON).

I'm just coming to an appreciation of the Ruger P-series. The P345 is new and I recently picked up a used P90 that looked new. Both fine guns. Sorry the P-series is history.

I remember back in the late '90s when I was in Indiana, there were P95s on every other gun-show table going for $245 to $275. Bought one and kept it for a few years. Not very accurate, but extremely reliable. Traded it for a Blackhawk convertible that was accurate. Now, I'm sorry I let the P95 go. It was a good gun.
