I took my new SAR 1 to the range for the first time today. I put 200 rounds through it. Shot accuratly and reliably every time.

The SAR1 is a smoking good deal. It's everting an AK is supposed to be: Inexpensive, reliable, accurate within reason, and easy to maintain. It's cheap to feed and easy to clean. Mags are cheap and last forever. If you bend a feed lip on an AK mag, what the hell are you doing, taking lug nuts off with it? :D LOL!!

If you're ever going shooting up Flagstaff way, holler. I shoot my SAR quite a bit.

Kudos .45Ruger ....... good ain't it!!:p

I only wish my ammo budget lived up to my wish to go shoot the crap outa my AK at every opportunity!! It is quite the simplest, and even crudest .... most reliable damn carbine around!!

I wish I would have gotten one when they were pushing $300. I'm starting to see them go for the mid $400 range.

Get them while you can. Because you know there is nothing the sheeple would rather ban than the AK 47. No gun could ever be as EVIL as an AK 47. WHAT?? You have an AK 47 what kind of a nut job are you anyway? I don't expect them to be available forever. wish I would have bought a Pre - ban back in the 80's. Just try and get one of those now!

Rant over Congrats on one of the best purchases you will ever make.

If I could find a wife as reliable as my AK47 I'd be a happy man!!!
(Just Joking :D

Warning!!!! these are so much fun it's hard to maintain a stock of ammo. You will go through amo like mad with these. Good thing it's cheap.

When I first bought mine I got a 1000 round case of ammo. Went out one evening and spent nearly the entire thing!! Only had about 150 rounds left. That case was supposed to last several months. oops..:D

.45Ruger,

Your screwed now! You actually shot it?!?! Boyyy, you'd have been better off smokin crack, and I dont mean Ophra's butt either! :) These things are addictive, you'll have a couple more before the weeks out. :) Lucky that AK's come in all colors and flavors. Of course you'll need at least 10 mags and a couple of cases of ammo for each. Lucky for you, it wont cost anymore than one AR for all this stuff. :D

Jedi nailed it. When I tell friends, most of whom own guns, that I got an SAR 1 for my birthday it usually unfolds like this:

"What's that?"
"It's a semi-auto varient of the AK-47."
"What the hel* do you need a dam* assault rifle for?"
"I don't NEED it right now, but I MAY in the future and I WANT it before ignorant people spouting "high powered, do-it-for-the-children, these-aren't-used-for-hunting" get them banned.

"Oh........................................ Does he have any more?"

My discussions with non-gun owning friends is much, much longer.
Baaaaa

Jedi, you are right on the money.

First, they put an import restriction on having a certain number of U.S. parts on the rifle. And, they took the trigger goup out and replaced it with a cheap American made group.

Question:"What step is next?"

More substitute parts and then....banning the importation because of legal technicalities.

I can see this one coming.

It's totally incremental. One step at a time until you [they] have achieved your [their] adjenda.:fire:

Congrats .45Ruger,

I am sniffing around for an AK and am looking at the SAR. I assume my dealer can get one for me. How did you procure yours?

Question?

How much cleaning up of the rifle did you have to do? I hear they are packed in grease. And how was the overall fit and finish? Was the front sight true? I have heard some come bent.

Interested in your general impressions. Thanks.

BDB ... just butting in ... my AK (SAR1) was clean as a whistle when i got it ... got a buddy FFL to aquire it for me .. and he shipped it to here ... no Cosmo .. sights true .... no probs. This was a new one of course.

Overall fit and finish .... pretty much OK, bearing in mind this ain't the most sophisticated beast around..... but rugged as hell!

Now my ole SKS!! Another matter entirely . Cosmo everywhere!!!!

P95Carry,

I am starting to salivate 7.62X39 drool. I must check with my dealer on SAR-1 availability next week.

Thanks for the info.

Fond memories of a buddy's pre-ban Chinese AK and then my father-in-law's MAK-90 inspired me to pick up a SAR-1 back in November...oh, wow...what an addictive thing this is. Cosmoline wasn't too bad on mine. I don't care for the slight fitting gap where the buttstock meets the receiver, but I'm planning on replacing all the furniture at some point, anyway. My front upper handguard jiggles very slightly, but I understand that's a common item on AKM variants like this.

I was actually considering selling this off toward something else...but one more trip to the range to bounce plastic milk jugs around at 100 yards convinced me otherwise!

With the fine, fine folks at AIM Surplus selling SAR1s for $280, you have no excuse for not getting one.

I don't want to order one of those things without eye-balling it first. I know they are cheap but I've seen some pretty crappy ones.

I really want an SAR II but I don't feel like getting another caliber rifle- already got a Russian SKS in the safe.
