Came across a deal too good to pass up, Savage 11 Hog Hunter in .223 Rem for just under $450 out the door. I got it this past weekend, and took off the iron sights (for now) so that I could install my Millett TRS-1 4-16x50mm scope, and threw on a JP Benny Cooley compensator I had laying around. I finally had time to hit the range today, and I am completely blown away by how nice this thing shoots. Not only does it have less recoil than my AR (Also fitted with a compensator) which allows me to literally watch the bullet impact, but the trigger is phenomenal. Even with my somewhat rudimentary shooting position pictured below I was able to shoot sub minute groups with ease, my best of the day being .55 moa using cheap American Eagle 55gr FMJ BT ammo. A few pictures to share for now, hoping to get a new stock very soon as well as a good bipod for an upcoming prairie dog hunt.

My deer rifle that I have owned since I was 11 is a Savage 110 .270 Win, so I knew the rifles could shoot. But this one definitely exceeded my expectations.:what:

Another group I shot just prior to the one above. I was almost satisfied, but decided to try one more time after moving the scope 2 clicks right. Still, quite happy with this one.

Oh, and the AR got a little sun today too :D

Anyone else on this site with a Savage 11/111? I'd love to see what others have done with theirs.

I have several 11/111's. Love 'em.

Been saying for awhile now that the Hog Hunters in .223 and .308 are sleepers. They're the former Model 10 Precision Carbine, but with irons and no AccuStock... For the person looking for a build, the AccuStock is likely getting tossed anyway.

I've got a .338 Win Mag Hog Hunter, and I like it so much I'm planning on grabbing a .308 or .223 version (or both) here soon. Great shooting, btw.

Very nice groups. I've thought about getting a hog hunter because I'd like to do some hog hunting. But I have a 110 with iron sights in 30.06 so I have it covered really. I just think the Hog Hunter is a nice overall package and basically I just want one. But if I bought every gun I wanted I'd have to build another house to live in because mine would be filled with guns.

I have a hog hunter .308 that I swapped the stock out to one of the hogue stocks and I love it. It's probably my favorite bolt gun I have ever shot

I have one in a .308, that shoots great. My 14yr old has had a rough time with his 243 youth model.Hes missed 4 deer and I've taken him to the range and he can barely hit the paper.Last week I let him shoot my hog Hunter . He only shot 3 times

He says now he knows what he wants for his birthday!!

Btw.. I have made no alteration to mine YET!
This is with factory Hornady 150gr Whitetail specials Ammunition.

Why would Savage ever call a gun chambered in .223 a hog gun? A hog is hard to kill to start with. Oh I know you can kill with a .22lr but bullet placement is key to killing with any gun. I live in Louisiana and at times we are over run with hogs, just the other day I counted 25 in one group on my place. Still hunting you might get by with a .223 but with dogs baying and with all the excitement in my opinion you need something a bit bigger. The lowest caliper I would use would be a .243 or maybe .30 caliper up would be better. I use a 45/70 to keep the dogs from getting cut up. The 45/70 does not have to expand as it makes a big hole going in and coming out. I'm new on here and I imagine I will be cut down for saying all this, but I'm talking from experience and from being 72 years old. I am not talking about the gun as ,Savage is one of the better guns out there, just the caliber being to small for the job.

Don't get caught up in the name.I do most of my jog hunting with a 243.Its just a model of gun they make in 223,308,338 with a threaded bull barrell, non Accustock, and with a Accutrigger

Oldman11, there are probably more hogs taken with AR-15s and the .223 round than all others. That being said, my choice would probably be .308 as well.

I shoot an 11 youth in 7mm/08 that I re sized with the help of a Boyd's heritage stock.
Never shot it for groups, but the first and only time I pulled the trigger after sight in produced a 15 point sc buck.
Safe to say I love that gun.

Definatly!!
I want to order a Boyd's for my 111 30-06.Just don't know if it's worth it yet

OnTarget will do all the things you see in the OP's photos and it will do most of it for free. I guess you could take photos with a phone and load it straight into an app and eliminate the problems of getting an image onto the computer but it's just a matter of transferring the same image you would be loading into the app. I'm not saying it wouldn't be handy to have the app. I just thought you might want to know that the OnTarget program does all that you you see in his image and for the most part it does it for free. The paid version has a few more features but the price is very low for the paid version. I just noticed it has a rangefinder listed at the bottom of the image but that would require more than a smart phone to work. Some apps do try to do range finding but they don't work very well in my experience.

How much stuff did you have to get from Savage to make it work ? Also did you have to bed it ?

Good to know. Prefer pics from a camera vs phone anyhow. Will have to look into On Target some more.

I didn't bed it at all, it just dropped right in and it's just a hunting rifle, so I felt no need.

When I got it, they only had the blind mag versions. If you have a detachable mag, they have them now. But even if they had 'em when I bought mine, I'd still have gone for the blind mag. For that, all I needed was a mag retaining clip (part # 106130, $2 straight from Savage) and a longer front action screw. For the front action screw, I went the lazy route... I hit the Tractor Supply they just gave me a 1/4-28 2" fine thread bolt. I cut it to length, and it's been there ever since. Savage now has them online for purchase. I bought one a few weeks ago, they call it a ".250-28 x .925"" (part # 107551), but it was just[/] too short, so I need at least a 1" bolt, probably a 1-1/8". But that's just my case of putting a blind mag Boyd's stock on a 111 Trophy Hunter, so it may be different if yours came with a different stock.

No mine is the same one !! Thanks so much I think I'm going to get the thumbhole version

what a COOL program

Yeah it's a keeper for anyone that ever even thought about target shooting. You can get very precise with it. I have a caliper and I get the same results from OnTarget as I get from my caliper. I rarely even use the caliper to be honest. Here's a sample of what it can do although the text can be made bigger than it is in this photo. You can put all sorts of info into an image using OnTarget. I shot this with my CZ 453 at 50 yards.
