New Scope Question

Need advice on a new scope for a Rem 700CDL in 3006. I am torn between the Nikon Monarch or the Leopold VX II. Both in 3X9 in a matte finnish.
Is one better than the other or is it a toss up. I have a great pair of Nikon binoculars that I love. Dont know much about leopold glass.

My experiences with both has been that they're probably equal in glass quality but the Leupold will simply be more durable.

I'm with rbernie, it's hard to go wrong with a Leupold. I've got a lot of older Nikon camera equipment, but just bought my first Nikon scope. I've more than one Leupold scope & will certainly continue to buy more. I, myself, am going to be interested in the comparison of the Nikon to the Leupold. But it's the Nikon being compared to the standard of the industry as far as I'm concerned.

Let me put it this way; I would think that the two would be fairly comparable in price. Therefore if the Leupold were significantly less expensive, I'd think it a good bargain. The Nikon would have to be significantly less expensive before I'd buy it without second thoughts. Just to put out a figure for argument's sake, let's say that $30.00 or more qualifies as significant.

I don't think that there is much to choose between them. Nikon are a very experienced high end optical equipment design and manufacturer. I am sure they did their homework before their first products; but they have been in the rifle and handgun scope long enough to have worked out any weaknesses. Personally I would probably go with Leupold, primarily because I prefer buying from an American company where possible.

I'd buy AMERICAN,,but, I believe the Nikon Monarch is a bit clearer than the VariX2...I have a few Nikons, very nice scopes, that I own because they were mounted on the rifles I bought, but I buy American when possible.
Leupold has the best warranty in the business, period.

The poster specified a VX-II, not a Vari-X II. There's a noticeable difference. The VX-II is equivalent to the Vari-X III.

Go Leupold. Ranking of optics goes: Tasco, Bushnell, Simmons, Nikon, Redfield, Burris, Leupold, Swavrowski=Zeiss.

Uh, you might want to do some research on the optics you've ranked. I don't believe that too many others are going to come up with the same list in the same order.

For instance, Meade owns Weaver Simmons & Redfield now that they bought those companies from Blount. Redfield is no longer American made & usually not nearly as highly thought of as they once were. Bushnell owns Tasco. However, the Bushnell Elite series does compare quite nicely to others far higher on your list, Burris for instance.

But, gee, you forgot Leapers !

Well, what are they going to do, put Tasco at the top and Zeiss and Swavrowski at the bottom? My list is just fine.

Looks like kennyboy ranked from low to high rather than vice-versa. But I'd put Nikon higher on the list in terms of quality of the lenses. I'm generally a Leupold guy, but have one very nice Nikon and several Burris scopes as well. Leupold's always my point of reference ... but I'll buy a Nikon or a Burris if the deal is right.

Hey, I'm sorry. I don't worry about buying those lesser brands. It's Leupold, Swavrowski, Zeiss, or nothing for me.

I'm well aware of that. I had Simmons until I got a Leupold. Now I refuse to buy anything less than Leupold.
