Some friends were visiting us from out of state (although they used to live in MT) and along with them was their eldest son's fiance. Well of course one of the things they like to do out at our place is shoot. Turns out the fiance had never fired a gun before in her life, but she went out back with us and shot the .22 scoped bolt rifle, .22 lever rifle, and the .22 single action revolver.
She did pretty good for her first time, and she said she like the open sighted lever action better than the scoped rifle. Finally we took turns with the revolver, and she hit the cans at least four out of five shots (not sure about the last one).
From later conversation, we learned that she is actually mildly anti-gun, but that didn't keep her from giving it a try. She commented that she did see how it was an interesting skill to pursue.
So I guess it is possible to introduce a new shooter (over eight years old) in Montana - you just have to import them
