New shooters can still be surprising...

... brought my fiancee to the range. She has shot with her father several times and with me a dozen or so times over the years, and once or twice with a female friend of ours.

She is learning the fundamentals, but yesterday she really surprised me. I took a Beretta 92 with us this time, and as it turns out, some shooters just take to DA/SA guns like ducks to water.

All the common wisdom I've ever heard suggested that DA/SA guns were harder to master because of the trigger transition, and they're outdated in a world where the gun trends are diverging toward striker or single-action guns, and that DA/SA is the evolutionary dead end. And of course everyone knows Beretta 92s are fat.

But, as it turns out, she really loved it. The DA trigger gives her time to focus on the trigger pull and helps her avoid that errant first shot, but the SA follow-up is short and crisper once she's settled into her shot string. Granted, this is a Langdon Beretta with all the options, so it's as nice a DA/SA trigger as you can get and has the great Ameriglo Spartan sights, both of which help tremendously.

She's still got a ways to go, but she's an apt student, and was shredding 4" bullseyes at 7-10 yards. Quite proud of her! She impressed the OFWG RSOs quite a bit. Moral of the story - don't assume you know what the new shooter in your life is going to like, they just might end up picking a gun you never thought they would.

Yup- Kinda like when I let people shoot my 3914DAO at the range. They can't believe it when I tell them it was discontinued in favor of the Shield series.

Back before COVID, my club had a summer youth program. They started the kids on .22 rifles, then went on to shooting trap with shotguns. One of the best with the rifles was a 14-year-old girl. When they went to shotguns, the instructor give the kids an intro to the guns (Mossberg 20-gauge youth-sized pump), had them take a few shots to get the feel of it, and then took them to the trap field. This girl stepped up, called "Pull," and smoked the very first bird, She then continued to smoke them, one after another. First time shooting a shotgun.

Some people are just naturals.

Toivo - it has been shown in assorted studies that many females have better "eye - hand coordination" than males do. That being said, what this girl did was "above average" and I hope she continues to be as fortunate in her other endeavors.

I've thought for a long time that if I ever go to a semi-automatic i would like a DA/SA. And (unrelated but since you mentioned this) I need a fat grip to be comfortable.

Anyway, major kudos to your fiancée, and happy shooting together. :)

The Langdon Beretta trigger is smooooooooth. And it has very slim grips that help make the grip merely thick and not thiiiiiiic. Very pleasant shooter!

Many years ago, I took my favorite wife to help me break in a new Beretta 92fs. She's 5'2" with small hands and no previous shooting experience. Without a blink, she was knocking over bowling pins at 15 yds. I got a scab on my chin after my jaw hit the ground at her nonchalant effectiveness. For years, it was her favorite handgun right up until the Nighthawk Custom 1911 she ordered came to live with us.

We live in a golden age of firearms in many ways. There are so many choices in ammo, in the firearms, the holsters, all of it.
Goldilocks is in reach of us all.
If occasionally needing serendipity to avoid having to Buy All the Things (not that there's anything wrong with that :) ).
