Yesterday a couple came into the store and explained that they had inherited a pistol from her father. They wanted info on shooting it and how to transport it to the range. Neither one had ever fired a gun before and were slightly nervous. After giving them the info on how to get it to the range they said they would be back shortly.

When they came back with the gun I checked it over (I’ve seen some seriously dangerous inheritances come in the door.) it was a well maintained Ruger SP101 with 2 ¼ inch barrel. He wanted to start out with .357 but a little gentle persuasion steered him instead to .38’s to start with.

After giving them safety and handling instruction we proceeded to the range to make noise. :) They both did quite well with it, although his wife had a little trouble with the double action pull. Loved single-action though. After letting them get used to the .38’s I loaded (with his permission of course) and .357 mixed in with the 38’s to get an idea of why I wanted to start them with the .38’s. With luck it was the first one to fire and it really surprised him by how much more power was in it. He was very glad I suggested .38’s first. His wife passed on the .357 though.

Too keep this fairly short, I spent nearly two hours in total with them (in-between other customers sometimes.) showing them other types and styles of guns. I always take a selection of my guns to work (just for play of course) and he fired a 1911, a Berretta 92, and my 10mm Razorback, she only wanted to try my Neos and fell in love with it. (Am I evil or what?). He on the other hand really liked how the .45 Baby Eagle felt in his hand and my co-worker kindly let him shoot his. I foresee a sale in the near future. They both had a good, safe time and I was assured that they would return. It is days like this that I really like working there.

The firearms community now has two more supporters and friends. :)

That's the way to do it! Two at a time is better than one. I keep trying to bring four newbies a year to my local range, usually I get a couple of keepers.
Good work!

That's great! Sometimes people just need that extra push to get thier curiosity moving. in this case it was an inhertited pistol. Getting guided instruction and a safe place to shoot can make a nervous situation much more relaxed. Having other guns there for them to try was also great. shows a diverse range of products and potentially made a sale or two.

Two thumbs up! :)

A little gently persuasion mixed in w/ good instruction will go a long way! Plus, it sounds like these two had a good time...good going ;)

Excellent! A story like this, where somebody who was obviously competent, patient, and courteous to a new shooter(s) just warms the cockles of my heart! THIS is the kind of help we all need, as law abiding gun owners, especially with the LADIES! My hat's off to you, sir...

That's a good thumbs-up story...

I wish everyone who looks into purchasing and shooting could get an experience like that. You're to be commended!

BTW, my gun-hating wife bought me a NEOS U-22 last year for Christmas. I had to beg her to shoot it. Wifey finally gave in, shot it, did very well, and actually said she enjoyed the experience.

Thank God for 22's!

I always try to treat people with respect and kindness, until I know you, then all bets are off. :)
