Yesterday I picked up a lightly used Sig P229R in 9mm for a new carry gun. I really love it but one thing I noticed while dry firing it leaves me somewhat concerned. This is my first Sig so try not to be too hard on me for asking this!

When I dry fired it a few times I noticed the hammer falls like it should but just short of striking the firing pin, or it appears that way. The only other DA/SA handgun I'm familiar with is the Beretta 92FS, and the hammer actually rests against the firing pin on that, where as the Sig's hammer does not. Is this normal?

My 226's hammer falls forward onto the firing pin when I dry-fire it, but then rests just short of the firing pin after everything stops moving.

Yep, my 226 does the same thing. Think that's the design.

Great gun BTW, congrats. I'm trawling for a 229 myself.

Actually your hammer is falling forward to strike the firing pin and than rebounding back to it's resting position...completely normal

Okay thanks!

I did test it using the eraser side of a pencil and dry fired the pencil out of the barrel so I know this gun will fire.

I think I'm really going to like this gun!
