I just bought a Taurus .38 special Ultralight for my wife. She has carried a S&W Model 36 for a long time but it gets a little heavy in a jacket pocket. The little Ultralight hardly weighs anything. She can carry all five chambers loaded because of the transfer bar instead of only four in the Smith. We're planning on a shooting trip on Memorial Day. She does love to shoot!

You do realize all post WWII S&W revolvers have an improved internal hammer block, so they're perfectly safe to carry with all chambers loaded. The lighter weight aluminum frames (Smith & Taurus alike) certainly do make carrying easier though.

Taurus ultralite

I bought the Taurus ultralite model 851 with concealed hammer in .38 Special back in November & have enjoyed carrying & shooting it. Congratulations sir.

My wife carries a S&W 642. She loves it as do I. Excellent little CCW piece.

I carry a Model 36 (with 5 rounds, I must add) and love the way it shoots. The 642 also interests me. However, when I shot a buddy's 642 the other day I couldn't help notice that it "flipped" around in my hand much more than the 36. Is that something you get used to - or am I better off staying with the heavier firearm?

Congratulations - good choice. My wife also has a Taurus Ultralite Titanium. Depending on your wife's overall health, grip strength, and so on, she can use Plus P loads safely ( your owner's manual will mention this is a separate section devoted to titanium models), but she can also get a Hydroshock with a reduced recoil load. I often carry my own little Taurus with me in an Uncle Mike's pocket holster - fits great in any normal or loose fitting slacks, jeans, cargo or carpenter's pants. And the price can't be beat!

Yes the 36 seems to be a little more managable with hotter loads but adjusting your grip will help control flip. Nothing but practice can conquer a control problem.

Good chioce , My wife has a mod. 85 which I installed Crimson Trace grip on for her and she really loves it. She also had a steel framed stubby which would get too heavy so when I bought the Taurus I actually got the steel one so it was a good deal all around. Enjoy the gun and especially getting to shoot with your wife.

I bought my wife a S&W 40 at her request a few years ago. First day at the range we were shooting it and my Sig 230. Last day I ever got to shoot my sig. But now I am a big snubby wheel gun fan.

Since 1944, as far as S&W is concerned.

I held one of those Taurus ultralite's....seemed pretty nice

Sorry, I just can't take a liking to Taurus revolvers, I would rather buy a used S&W J frame instead. Good luck with your new revolver, I hope it serves you well...

BTW, if you ever decide to carry that M36 again, please load all 5 cylinders!

Here's the scoop on Taurus snubbies.

I have an older Taurus 85CH and a brand new spanking Rossi 462 in stainless steel.

The Rossi is a 6 shooter ( no Colt Detective Specials have been made in years) and the 85CH is a 5 holer.
Thought to bring the 'A' game that should hopefully answer any questions.

Don't have any experience with the Charter offerings.

Which ever one fits you and your needs is the one to get.
