Okay so I think I found the guy.

To protect his identity I will blank out names. The tag had no personal info other than his name, so it was difficult. I am sending it through regular snail mail because

1)Don't know if he has an email.
2)Don't know if he is alive, date on tag says 1939.
3)It might be interesting to get it back in the mail with maybe some pics of the recruit and his rifle. All I know, is whatever I get back, I'm going to treasure it.

Now to the letter:

Greetings Sir:
I found a small plastic tag underneath the butt-plate of my K31 (Karabiner 1931) rifle. This piece of plasticsized paper had the following information hand written on it:

Fus. xxxxxx, x. xxxxx
III 110 1939
Moutier

Obverse side:

xxxxxx (Serial Number)

Would this young recruit be you, Sir?

I found this piece of paper underneath the butt-plate of the K31 rifle that has come into my possession. The serial number suggests that the rifle was manufactured in 1944, but the date on the plastic tag says 1939, so I am hoping that you could clarify which.

I enjoy owning this wonderful rifle, and hope to own it for many more years. I can safely say that Switzerland's Army had/has some of the finest rifles around.

You can reach me at my postage address:
