New Taurus 66 disappointments UPDATED

UPDATE: First off, I made a mistake in my original post. It was Remington ammo I first tried, not Federal. Duh! Sorry.

I took it back to the shop I bought it at and we dropped in a couple different brands of loads to see if the cylinder would spin. It seems like its free and clear of any binding with anything Winchester, .38's or .357's. I also tried some Magtech .357's and they work fine too. It seems the rim is thicker on this Remington than some of the others.

But... just what I didn't want... a picky revolver. I may send it back, not sure yet. This is the time of year I get more time to shoot, so I think I'll just see how it does for a bit. Maybe it'll loosen up a little.

(original post 12/17)
I took my new Taurus 66 out to run a few rounds through it this morning. The cylinder won't turn smoothly enough to fire consistantly through all 7 rounds. So I took out the Federal .38 spc rounds and put in some .357's. Same deal. I got the first 3 rounds off, then it bound up. I flipped it open and rotated the cylinder by hand, shot another round, then the same thing. so I unloaded it, wiped it down and looked at everything. There's no gunk in it, no little chunks of lead. I can clearly see a big brass colored smudge where it's dragging on the frame.

Bummer! :cuss:

Do you think I should send it back to Taurus or have a local "smith" with a good rep try to fix this thing?

PS: When it did fire, the trigger pull felt good. Overall the gun feels good, but GEEEZ!

Bring it back to your dealer and see if he'll return it for you, if not contact Taurus and send it back. It may take a while but they will fix it for you.

Two things to check: make sure the ejector star is clean and dry underneath, and make sure the extractor rod is screwed in tightly.

For most revolvers, one of those is usually the culprit. However, I've seen two Taurus 66's do this new out of the box, and neither solution worked. It turned out in both cases to be very poor fitting.

Yes, Taurus guarantees it, but I've heard of waits exceeding six months. It may be worth taking to a gunsmith and paying a bit to get it working.

The good news is, once they're working, the model seems to be very resilient and reliable.

Just Got My 66 Back

Just got mine back from Taurus. Seemed to exhibit similar symptoms. Mine however probably had 5,000 rounds through it (mostly 38 special). Taurus is not fast: It took about 2 1/2 months to get it back and I have no idea what they did but it seems to work.

Other than this it's been a both a reliable and accurate gun but when I bought it I expected to get what I paid for (and got it).

The guy at the gun shop told me that's usually the case. Smith and Wesson is better in this regard apparently. Got me to thinking that perhaps when buying a Taurus I should buy 2 and use one as a backup. ('Course for that money I could buy a S&W). Just kidding, most of what I've heard is good about late model Taurus's.
