.40 S&W 6+1 (this one I will take a very close look at)

^I have been going back and forth in my head weather or not to trade my PF9 for a 709, but the reports of the 709 not being +p capable really bug me, this gun may be the ticket! Every one and their mom has an opinion on Taurus products, but I reall hope they get this one right.

.380 ACP 7+1  (really should have stepped up the mag capacity imo)

I saw that, too. I'm not a Taurus guy at all and I'll admit to being unjustly biased as I have zero experience owning a taurus, yet I avoid them.

That is the one that I'm interested in hearing more about. Maybe a few gun biased rag opinions to change my already biased view...

I switch back and forth between carrying a g19 and various 1911's. I love the slimness of a 1911 and have always felt like I would prefer to carry something thin like that, but in 9mm or 40 S&W...but in a subcompact or pocket pistol size. This may be the ticket for me.

So, the 708 is a 709, just chambered in 380 instead of 9mm? What the heck is the point? The 709 is very soft shooting with standard pressure 9mm (so much softer than the PF-9 that the difference is laughable).

The 740, though, is interesting. I have a 709 and love it. Since all 40 is hot and there is no 40+p, one wouldn't be limited in ammo choices with the 740..

My PT-709 has over 1200 rounds through it with no significant issues. Can't say whether the 708 and 740 are as good, but to pitch them all out because they are made by Taurus is just plain ridiculous. I've not found anywhere that says the 709 isn't rated for +P, but do you really need to shoot +P in a gun this size? Muzzle velocity is less than 5% greater for the +P, and energy is only about 7% greater for the +P at 25 yds. I've put plenty of standard pressure rounds through a PF-9 - if you're shooting +P through yours, you must be a masochist!!:what: I carry my 709 with standard pressure HST's, and figure that is all I'll ever need in a bad situation. And I've got no concerns whatsoever about betting my life on the reliability of my Taurus. Lot's of posts about bad 709's, but mine's not one of them. I keep it squeaky clean, and it's been good since day one.

I think its in the manual, also if you call them up thats what they will tell you.

...and yes, I do "need" +P (HOT +P) I'm an American dammit! Bigger numbers are better, always. :p

Thats what I keep hearing and I really hope they maintain that with the 740.
My hope is that the recoil in the .40 Taurus is equivalent to the PF9 with +p ammo in it, that should be reasonable, right?

If the 709 is not rated for 9mm Luger +P, how is its counterpart going to be rated for the higher recoil .40? This is really academic, however, because 9mm is quite enough in such a little pistol. :uhoh:

I was badly burned by a Taurus years ago and have had little interest since then, but I admit the little 709 does intrigue me.

It's not the "recoil," it's the pressure. 9mm Parabellum and.40 S&W are rated at pressures 35,000 and under. 9mm +p is closer to 38,500 or 10% greater.

Standard pressure 9mm is very comfortable to shoot from the 709. As comfortable as a full size. I have no idea how, but the design is damn genius just for that.

Now, if only Ruger would rip off the 709 like they did the LCP from Kel-Tec :D

The Academy I got my 709 at on Sunday had just sold their .40. Luckily I wasn't interested in it as I already have two .40s. They also offered a nice little Bulldog bag with the Taurus name on it for a whopping $10 extra. That was a no-brainer if ever there was one. Except for the crazy long trigger pull, the gun is a dream. I was expecting big recoil from the small body, but it was probably as light or lighter than my G19. I only ran 50 rounds through it so far, but will be running at least another 50 through later today. Hopefully I'll get used to that trigger pull length.

I'm sure the first intent was to sell that in countries where civilians can't own 9mm (or other military and police chambered) firearms. I think Brazil is one of those countries.
That sounds reasonable, but come on, they coudnt have given us a 10+ round mag!? :p

did you ever shoot the .40? is it the same size as the 709? I need details! haha

I've shot 400 rounds of +p ammo in my 709 and yes, it really knocks the gun and i believe it will shorten it's life, but i've had nothing indicating a kaboom is on it's way. Everything looks pristine after each cleaning. But it's obvious it's a bit much for the pistol. Still, very low recoil. The Slim is one of my favorite pistols.
