A little background first. I've been looking at ARs for a couple of years now. But the right one didn't come into my life until this month. I was about to pull the trigger on purchasing a Stag Arms 2TL left-handed "Tactical" model, but was putting the purchase off until I had some other purchases done.

Then a used Stag-15 waltzed into the door of my local gun emporium. The owner has shot it and gave it a thumbs up. The bore and rifling look good on examination, practically new in fact. Only other wear was some brass marks on the deflector. The story was the previous owner had received an ultimatum from the marital unit and had to sell something. Added enticement, there was a used 9mm upper that had already been shot with lower and was reported to shoot well. After walking away for a couple of days of rumination, I came back and made a package offer on the both of them. For the same price as a new Stag Tactical I walked away with both, a happy opportunity.

The 9mm upper is an A1 pattern receiver with bayonet mount, and doesn't have any identifying marks other than a C and H on the right side of the carry handle. It comes with a magwell insert that has a toggle mag release and uses standard Sten magazines. One other distinguishing mark is it takes a spacer in the pivot pin as the upper has a larger diameter hole than the newer Stag lower. I'm about 90% sure it's an Oly upper as they are the only ones I've found online that use that magazine.

As far as the Stag upper it's their Model 2H Pre-ban.

I'm going to leave it as it is right now. I'm going to get used to the iron sights as well as installing one of my cheap red dots at first, with an eye towards upgrading to an EOTech or Aimpoint in the future. A piston upper might be in the far off distance, but it's hard to tell right now. I'm also thinking of purchasing a suppressor for it, but would need to change the charging handle, and maybe go with a left-handed upper before doing so, as I got a big shot of gases to my snoot from the suppressed AR I shot previously.

I'm planning on making some minor changes to the Stag lower. I want an ambi-safety, as well as a Norgon ambi-catch. Also the collapsible 6-position stock isn't in very good shape, looks like the person who put it on didn't use the right tool or take good care of it, and I'm planning on replacing it. I'm thinking of something from Ace, either their Skeleton or Socom stock. One thing I haven't been able to figure out is if I have the right buffer tube for the Skeleton stock or would need to buy a new buffer also. And also if I do so is that different buffer going to effect the function of the 9mm upper?

This is as far as I've gotten. I'm a complete neophyte where it comes to ARs, I've only shot them enough to appreciate them, and this is my first. So I"m looking for what ya'll would suggest I need to go with it. I'm looking for recommendations for cleaning supplies, as well as basic maintenance tools.

First thing I'm planning to buy is a maintenance manual. I'm fairly sure I'll need a punch/hammer combo as the takedown and pivot pins are pretty tight. I normally use a boresnake with CLP for quick cleaning of my guns in conjunction with a wipedown and lubrication. For a more thorough cleaning, I use a rod, patches and Hoppes 9. I assume that I'm going to need some kind of chamber brush and whatever is needed for the gas system? Stag Arms offers a field repair kit that looks useful, any comments? Finally would a sight tool and combi-tool for removing the stock be in order?

I'm interested in feedback on what I think I need for basic maintenance, as well as other items that you think I've left off. Thanks in advance for your help.

To replace the selector with an ambi, you will need a punch/mallet to remove the trigger and hammer pins, and whatever wrench removes the screw in your pistol grip. I use the RRA ambi selectors, and they work great for me so far. For cleaning, I use Hoppes #9 to clean, and Breakfree CLP to lube. I run my ARs fairly wet. I use Q-tips to clean inside the carrier, and behind the locking lugs in the receiver. These are the two most important areas to keep clean.

The gas tube will not require any cleaning.

For the bore, I use a cleaning rod, patches, and Hoppes, followed by CLP and then a dry patch or two.

A similar question was just asked recently:
http://www.thehighroad.org/showthread.php?t=273355

All you really need is a toothbrush, a good 30cal and 22cal rod (one piece, not those cheap sectioned ones), some CLP (I use FP10, Breakfree's good, etc), powder solvent (Hoppe's, etc), 22cal and 30cal jag, 22cal and 38cal bore brush (brass only) and 22 and 30cal patches. (rifles boresnake optional, but handy)

Don't clean the gas tube (9mm doesn't have one anyway does it?).

Don't use a hammer and punch on the takedown pins! Smack them with the butt of a screwdriver if you must, but they will loosen up.

Don't buy a book. You can find everything you need to know about the AR/M16 on the web somewhere.

Download your maintenance guides and manuals here:

TM 9-1005-319-10 and TM 9-1005-319-23 highly recommended (near the bottom). I have both those printed out and in a looseleaf binder for easy reference.

Update on the upper. Now that I've searched for some upper pictures it's the spitting image of a Colt/RRA pattern 9mm upper. It's got that half-circle brass deflector and the cut down ejector door. But, it came with a magblock that takes Sten magazines, which would make it an Oly but it doesn't have the same deflector as an Oly. The only thing I can think of is a Colt upper with Oly internals, but I'm not sure how to check that. That's assuming that Colt internals wouldn't work with a Sten mag at all, or at least not reliably which is how the upper was described to run. Very curious, I'll have to take some good pictures of it for posting if this leaves everyone scratching their collective heads.

I actually read that thread and decided that my question was different enough to warrant a new thread instead of tagging onto that one.
No problem. I wasn't trying to say your new thread was redundant, just thought the info might be helpful.

About the upper, have you checked the pistol caliber forum at ar15.com?

I'm going to have to. It's a little intimidating over there though. There's so much info it's hard to know where to go. It was the 9mm upper thread at ARFCOM where I saw the profile of the Colt/RRA uppers.

a standard milspec cleanning kit is a great start. i also love the boresnake and will be taking mine to the desert this time. i do use pipe cleaners as well.
