Folks,

I have been trying to gather as much info as possible for my first AR. I dont intend it for CQC (at least hopefully not), but primarily for target shooting, which would occasionally be out to 300yds. For at least this first gun, I dont anticipate hanging lots of stuff on it - keeping it fairly basic. Priority is on accuracy and to help me get "broken in" to shooting this type of weapon. Price range is under $1500 with a scope (again looking for a mid grade scope) is the goal.

I have looked at the SPikes Tactical and The Charles Daly ARs closely (at least closely on the web). I really like the looks/features of the CD M4LE.

Couple of Questions:
Your perceptions of the M4LE? How does it differ from the M4LT (both are listed on gun genie for same price ~$1150)

Are these good values?

Thanks for your help

Mick

Well for just target shooting I wold go with a match grade A3 20" barreled AR with a good LPK, such as the www.rockriverarms.com NM A3. It's around $1250 on their site.

Nikon, Super Sniper, Falcon Menace and others will have good scopes without breaking the bank, infact I will be purchasing a Falcon Menace 4-14 FFP before hunting season.

Wish I had enough money for an AR.....:)

My opinion.
I'd stick with an 18" or 20" if you plan on target shooting mostly, and avoid the carbines.

Also, build one yourself. It's really easy.

Spend your money on a
-Quality barrel--> Lothar Walther
-Quality bolt group--> LMT, BCM, Daniel Defense
-Nice trigger--> Timney, Alexander Arms, Geissele, etc. etc.

Here's a good scope for the money for target shooting.

For $1500 you can put together a heck of a nice AR.

I just put one together with mix master bargain bin parts, and it shoots great. After some wheeling and dealing, I am into it for ~$350.

Thanks guys

I am less than a year into anything to do with guns and to be honest hesitant to start off with a build. The RRA does look like it would fit the bill better for what I plan to do.

Check out the Remington R-15. Made by Bushmaster and much lighter in weight than most.I have one and am very happy with it.

I own the RRA NM and love it. I shoot NRA Highpower and see MANY RRA's on the line. Mine is an A2 as rules dictate but for your purpose the flat top A3 would be a good choice and easy to mount optics. Shop around various sites. I feel confident you can do much better than $1250 advertised price. Great guns and fun to shoot.

I got my DPMS Panther bull 20 last year. It listed for $800 at the time.
I put a $350 Burris Fullfield II 4-14x scope on it. (okay, it came with a spotting scope.)

I can do dime-sized groups with it at 100 yards.

DPMS uses single stage triggers, most others use a 2-stage trigger. This is the critical point between you and the rifle, so be sure you get what you want.

The scope is fine for 100 yards, but 200 yards is not so great. I'm looking at 24-32x max scopes. They are $500-800.

The bull is pretty heavy to wield around. An HBAR weight rifle would be better if you are going to carry it very much.

I own a Bushmaster Varminter and I'm impressed. The predator version has a shorter barrel, and is as accurate. Honestly though, unless you're looking to bench the gun and do varmint hunting with it, the basic military configuration from any manufacturer will challenge you for a long time. Most will do 2 MOA or better with cheap ammo and few shooters can do that consistently without a bench. If you want to save some dollars, shoot with open sights. It's harder, but again, the point is to challenge yourself, right? The highpower guys do it all the time out to 600 yards.

I also own a Colt 6920 for in close work but the RRA NM will shoot a tad better out at the far end with 20" BBL plus $300-$400 more to put into Optics. :D Love the Prancin Horse too though. Wouldn't kick either out of the Safe for eatin Wolf Ammo.

You really hit the nail on the head with this comment. I was getting side tracked a little in terms of all the options, but my real objective was to do exactly what you said, "challenge myself". Thanks for getting me back on track.

Stag Arms makes good ARs, as well, and their barrels are all chromed standard.

Shooting at 300 yards with iron sights isn't too hard with an AR.
