I'm looking for a red dot scope/sight for my AR. I bought a Bushmaster 20" national match upper (i think) and put a simmons 6x20 scope on it. Worked great last weekend on prairie dogs but i think i want a dot scope. I'm getting old so it needs magnafication but dont know what i'm looking for. Is there anything that will let me be able to see the little p-dogs at 200 yards? Price range? Not sure

An illuminated reticle scope will probably serve your needs better than a red dot. Red dots are often designed for speed rather than pinpoint accuracy and the reticles can be distracting/too big when magnified. The magnifiers for red dots may also not offer enough magnification for your purposes.

That is what i was afraid of, the dots being bigger that the dogs.

The red-dot sights are great for what they were designed for - man size targets. Most cover 3 or 4 MOA. Even the EOTec, with a 1 MOA dot, would cover 2" at 200 yds. Not what you need for p-dogs. Best to just use a scope with a fine reticle, although the illuminated dot reticle idea that was previously mentioned certainly has merit, and would be worth looking in to.

IF you have the "scratch" for it IOR Valdada makes ,IMHO, one of the best illuminated "p-dog" scopes out there.

It's their 3-18x42 with the MP-8 dot reticle. The reticle has a .25 MOA illmunated dot in the center of a VERY nice "Mil-Dot" type cross hair.

Now here's the "bad" news.. they go for about $1600!

Good glass is worth it's weight in gold..

Bad/cheap glass is just a waste of good beer money!

Good luck

I guess the question is, what did you *not* like about the Simmons 6-20?

Whatever the answer is, like others have said you are going to be looking for another "standard" magnified scope of some sort; maybe with slightly less magnification, or an illuminated recticle or something... a red dot is not going to do it for you.

The simmons is good and clear. I have 3 Nikons on my bolt guns and am used to the eye relief with them i guess. Seems like i have to get the simmmons a lot closer to my eye than with the nikons. I can get used to it though. Its nice to see 2 or 3 p-dogs at a hole and getting all of them w/out taking the gun off the shoulder.

weaver mount russian kobra would have you killing things down to about rabbit size at 200 yds. smaller than that the dot would come close to obscuring the target.
There is a 2X Aimpoint red dot I would get a 1moa dot if they sell the scope with it. Really though 2X is not much better than no power.
Sounds like ACOG 4X scope might be your best bet but pricey.
