Hello all, my name is Steve Goselin and I am a newbie. Actually I grew up shooting, but have not seriously pursued it in well over 30 years. I must admit that I am going through a bit of a culture shock as I go through the process of getting a license, joining a club, deciding on a firearm etc. I grew up in rural MA and I remember back in the 50's actually bringing a rifle to school for show and tell. Those were very different times. My father and everyone else I knew hunted and owned guns, it just was not a big deal. I left home at 17, moved to Boston and just lost touch with my roots, hunting and fishing and shooting, the whole deal. In the early 70's I did get an FID card when they were instituted, but never even owned a gun. A few months back my wife and I got to talking and decided that we would take up some form of shooting as a hobby. We once shot skeet together and it was great fun. We wanted something we could do together and neither of us play golf. I contacted the local police and found out that my "lifetime" FID card was no longer valid and that we both needed to take a safety course. Sounded reasonable enough. I contacted an instructional shooting school and they suggested that we take the basic pistol safety course instead as that would also cover long arms. I ran the idea past my wife who to my surprise expressed great enthusiasm at the idea of pistol shooting. Who knew! We took a 10 hour course and passed the test. The shock came when I called the police back to get our applications. I naively assumed that as a law abiding citizen that it was my right to get a gun permit and that I would be treated with the dignity and respect that I have earned. The officer launched into a tirade saying things like, "What do you think you can just waltz in here and get a pistol permit" "Why do you want a gun?" "Where did you live before this and why don't you already have a permit" in a heartbeat I was reduced to a 12 year old kid who had been caught throwing apples. Luckily my sales experience kicked in and I won him over. In MA the police chief or his representative has final say and can deem anyone "unsuitable". Still I find this to be unbelievable. What the hell has happened? I am a 52 year old business owner who employs over 50 people, I vote, I pay taxes, I have been married for 20 years and lived in the same house since 1990, I have no criminal record and I certainly have no intent of breaking the law. How is it that I can be treated in this manner? My wife is a school teacher on a military base and we both raise substantial money each year for the MS walk. We are good people. At any rate we are currently in the process of submitting our applications. We had to join a club, which we intended to do anyway. Also we are continuing to take classes and learn more. I have also joined the NRA and GOAL (Gun Owners Action League) and am becoming active. I have no doubt that we will ultimately get our permits, but this is just wrong. No doubt I am preaching to the choir, but at least in MA the system is really screwed up. Forgive me for the rant, but I have found few outlets for my ire. I look forward to learning from you folks. We are entering this new endeavor with beginners hearts and minds and appreciate any thoughts or direction. Thank you. Steve

GOOD FOR YOU BOTH! Welcome back to the shooting community and welcome to THR!

Makes you wonder when so many people fear us law abiding, solid, hard working citizens doesn't it? WE ARE NOT THE CRIMINALS!

Enjoy relearning shooting and glad you are BOTH getting into it.

Hi Goose !
No need to ask forgiveness for a rant with content such as yours. We hear ya ! I'm sorry to hear of all the hoops you had to jump through in MA. to acheive what is supposed to be a constitutional right.
Kinda makes you feel like a circus act doesn't it ? . Anyway, thanks for stoppin' by and Welcome to The High Road !!!!!:D

Steve, Id like to welcome you and your wife to the High Road.

Tell the Mrs. not to be shy, we have plenty of women here as well.

It is unfortunate that MA. makes it so difficult for citizens to obtain a weapons permit. Many states are not as difficult.

Enjoy your time here and remember, no question is dumb. Also let me point you to the search button on the upper right. We have been around for a year now and a wealth of knowledge is there at your becon call.

Also for archived gun related information visit www.thefiringline.com
The website is inactive and is for reading only but the search function works there as well. Thats where most of us were prior to Oleg starting this fine site.

Good day and good shooting.

before you know it steve, you'll be wishing you lived in a state where no one questions your legitimate lawful interests.

the real question is, is it worth it to stay in a state and fight the good fight against the hoplophobes, or is it more satisfying to relocate to an area where that fight has already been won?

Welcome Steve, from a fellow Massachusetts resident.

The whole process here is a real PITA, and takes a while besides. I just put in for my pistol permit this morning, and was told flat out, "We don't issue a LTC the first time". Hmm, what if I feel that I need it? It doesn't really matter to them.

At any rate, there are worse states, (albeit not too many) and there are a lot of good clubs around. I joined the Mass Rifle Association last week. It's in Woburn, ( http://www.massrifle.com ). A freindlier bunch of people I haven't met yet. Like you, I am getting back into it after a long hiatus. Now I just have to win over my wife to the idea. :)

Hello jamz, I joined the Woburn Sportsman's Association in Bedford. I have done my volunteer work and get my second reading and membership card and key this Thursday evening. They let my wife stuff envelopes. I had to change the targets on the 200 yard big bore range during a match. A lot of walking, but great fun. Good luck on your permit. I actually hired an attorney who specializes in firearms law to consult on my application. Who knows if it will make a difference, but he did give me some good advice.

I'm very happy to say welcome Steve. You will find a great people here and lot of knowledge. Don't give up here in Poland we have horrible gun laws, so it's impossible for 99,9% of good law-abiding citizens to have a gun (even for home defense). Good luck for you friend. Adam

Massachusetts has a Congressional delegation that is 100% far-left liberal Democrat and a State Legislature that is nearly so.

Blame Fat Teddy, Bugsey Bolger, and your fellow citizens who continue to elect these gun grabbers.

Welcome to the club of persecuted Goose. MA is one of the few NE states I would not move to if I wanted to enjoy my firearms - it's as bad as California.

Hi, Goose!

Please, consider passing the proverbial 'coffee' to your friends, and maybe even your employees! You can network to your heart's content here, vent, preach, fume, and laugh all you want.

Before a uniform CCW law was passed hee in Colorado, my partner Susan and I went all the way up to then-Governor Roy Romer, petitioning for concealed carry permits (we were receiving constant death threats from area crack dealers - witnessed by Denver Police {including two firebombing attempts} - to no avail).

I spend much of the spare time I have working on 2A efforts. . .

On to the important stuff: what do you and your wife enjoy shooting???

Susan and I are .45acp addicts (Colts, Kimbers, a Glock, and an HK USP Compact, to name the favorites)!

Make yourself right at home!

Trisha

Welcome, Goose.

When are you opening a branch of your company in Texas? Good climate, no state income tax, ample labor force...

oh, and carry permits and lots of open land and inexpensive range fees.

Regards,
Rabbit.

Well congrats on getting back into shooting! Welcome to THR!

Why are you being treated the way you experienced?

Because the left-wingers have so thoroughly demonized guns that in the minds of many people, firearms now sit on the same list as child molesters and rapists.

Wonderful, isn't it?

Next on your list is to join the NRA, GOA, and other pro-firearms groups so that we can change this awful state of affairs.

Welcome again!

Still I find this to be unbelievable.

No offense intended, but you shouldn't. The state of affairs in MA (and other states as well) exist because moderate voters are ignorant. Ignorant of local, state, and federal gun laws. And, honestly, the vast majority of them will never care, because it will never effect them. Your ignorance was shed only due to your decision to pursue a sport. What would have happened if you and your wife would have decided to go ahead and take up golf?

I say this not to chastise you for your former state of ignorance, but so that you can recognize it in others and help them shake off their ignorance as you did yours. Congratulations, and welcome. :)

And blame myself for not paying attention. I have to take personal responsibility for the situation, however I do not have to continue with my head in the sand.

Good point Trisha. Due to my wife and I my business partner, his wife and their 3 daughters have taken up shooting and are also in the process of applying for their permits. We talk with all of our friends, employees, fellow workers etc. and overall they are very interested. My wife has become extremely passionate on the subject. When she first inquired about concealed carry the police officer asked her if she had actually been assaulted or raped. Needless to say she was off and running at that point. Great logic, they won't give you a permit in order to defend yourself, but once someone is a victim (with possible revenge in mind) they start to take you seriously. Great logic. This issue has actually caused us to draw closer together politically.

Welcome to you and your wife,

If you think getting a permit is a pain, wait till you try to buy a handgun....You can't buy what you want. You can only buy what they allow you to buy.

There are only a certain few that are deemed SAFE for the consumer here in Mass. Even used ones are getting hard to come by. They have to have been in this State prior to 98 with proof, and on THE LIST. Of course the LIST is never published, so you don't really know.

Sounds like the run around, doesn't it? Well that's the point.

Enjoy,
Bob

That statement makes me smile. :)

You will NEVER hear words like "personal responsibility" come out of a leftist.

Just had to point that out... :)

Absolutely right Demise and I take full responsibility for my ignorance and lack of action. I knew that the gun laws were changing and not for the better, but it did not effect me (I thought). I have been waking up about a lot of things lately and this is one of them. Moving forward I can only hope that I can make some difference.
