I do quite a bit of swapping and trading. Found my way into a browning a-bolt stainless the other day. I only buy 30-06 rifles as i'm just partial to that caliber. I've never owned a browning bolt action, so I figured I'd give it a whirl. First impressions were that I liked the gun, but the stock is the ugliest thing I've ever seen in my life. Some weird blue camo pattern with skulls in it.. ugh, when I come across a new stock, you bet your butt it'll be changed, for now I'll probably just put some camo tape on it.

I put a low cost optic on it but one that I've always liked, went out yesterday to site it in... WOW! I don't know if I've ever shot this well personally, but the rifle is amazing! I'm fairly poor so I use the low grade federal 180gr. hunting ammo (stuff you get from wally world for 16 dollars a box). I only have 30 rounds and with the recent gun craze ammo has been non-existent so I only shot enough to get the scope zeroed. after 3 shots it was on zero. Changed targets and put 4 more through it, well under 1 inch!!! I want to call it 1/2 inch but might be a little bigger. The third out of the 4 shots I flinched and knew it was going astray, but 3 of them you could easily cover with a quarter.

What a gun! This one has found a permanent home! I may get poor and have to sell it to pay a bill with, but I'm going to really try to keep this one around! Now to do something about that hideous stock!

p.s. I'm mainly posting this to brag a bit on my new gun and if someone like me is doing a quick internet search for this gun, maybe it'll help them in deciding whether or not to purchase it... Oh yeah, paid $485 for it ;-)

my other plan for this rifle is to get a smith to put some iron sights on it, I abhor a gun without iron sights or at least without the option of mounting some.

I have owned a Browning A-bolt 7mm mag for 21 years. It is extremely accurate and has brought down a bunch of deer. It would be one of the last guns I would let go of.

I wouldn't bother the barrel on a rifle if I liked the way it shot. Moreover, I wouldn't change the stock or bedding either. Paint that sucker and call it good!

right? that was in my mind that putting the iron sights on it might mess it up as far as harmonics go... I just really really despise a gun that is useless without a scope, banged a scope one hunting trip and gut shot a deer because of it, scope was 18 inches off. From now on, if I even think I banged a scope too hard I'll remove it and iron sight hunt... it is kinda tricky thinking about messing up my harmonics though :-( hard call, but I'd rather have a gun that I can shoot than one that I can't.

You can get a scope & mount that would be hard to knock out of calibration using a hammer. Good scopes and mounts these days put you in a situation where the scope will be broken before the system loses zero. And then there's detachable mounts and extra optics in a pouch on the butt stock...

Personally I just take two rifles. If I bang one real hard I go back to the jeep and get the other.

Moreover, I wouldn't change the stock or bedding either
very true- the original stock was individually hand bedded to barrel. A can of brake cleaner might melt those skulls if they are painted.

I've always heard that blue camo stocks with skulls shoot better than others.

I too have a browning A bolt. Mine is in 7 mag and it's been so accurate that it is the only rifle I've used for close to 20 years. No reason to switch.
