New to me SKS

Well I got my first centerfire rifle. It is a Chinese Norinco SKS. I am going to use this for deer and hog hunting. Where I live here in N.E. OKlahoma if i get a 50 yrd shot it would be a long one. Tons of trees and brush. Have been reading tons of info on SKS's on other sites as well as this one.

I picked it up for $250 otd. I figure it is inexpensive to buy and shoot. I know there are lots of better calibers out there that would fill the role better. But I tend to like the milsurp type weapons better.

They are good rifles! Remember, they work better as it is. I have had one from when I was a kid. Over the years, I tried almost every accessory for the sks there is. The best configuration is bone stock! The rear cover scope mounts dont work! The other stuff either. Save your money!

I get 2-3" at 100 yds with wolf surplus out of mine. (Thats great IMO).

I read an article by a guy who was a hog hunter for many years, and had finally settled on the SKS as the best rifle for it.

Looks good! Only thing you may need is a front sight tool. My Rommy needed some tweaking to get on target.

I just had a flashback. That was me back in 1992. The first centerfire rifle I bought myself was a Norinco SKS and I still have it. I even took it deer hunting back then.

I tried all the accessories they make. There are a few worth having which aren't original military issue:

5 rd magazine----needed for hunting

ventilated handguard---- looks cool and assists dissipating heat

front site adjustment tool----the c clamp kind is crap, the allen wrench kind is good

rubber buttstock pad----useful to extend length of pull

folding stock----allows you to store it easily in a smaller area

mojo type rear aperture site----allows faster target acquisition and increased sight radius

If you install any of them, be sure to keep the original parts so you can restore it.

I put a black synthetic stock on mine. The only thing it made better was the buttstock length. ( length of pull) I sold that one years ago. I kept my Russian original.

I enjoyed a tapco t-6 on mine. I do however like the original mags better, those duck bill lookin ones and me don't get along I've always liked sks's.

I never had any feeding issues with the duckbills. They are just akward for me to seat.

bought an SKS myself in about 92, as my first centerfire! Paid $110 bucks for it brand new, soaked in cosmoline. I have one 30 rd 'USA" brand mag that still works perfectly, and the stock I added makes the rifle fit me better. I have one of the Chinese dust cover scope mounts with a Chinese 4x20 that...oddly, it seems....holds zero relatively well actually. However, I'm well aware this is not usually the case!!!! I've considered getting rid of it a time or two, having expanded the collection considerably since then, but just can't ever quite go thru with it! Collected a few deer with it over the years too....

The SKS is one of the most under valued milsurps on the market, today, a real ''sleeper''. I love my Russian SKS. Congrats!

Clean that cosmo, light sand job, and pop some polyurathane on that beast and you're good to go. I own a yugo SKS in stock config (except i removed bayo). The only thing you will be doing is going to the poor house from all the cheap 7.62.. If 640 rounds is only 117, why not just spend $200 for 1400? or $300 for 2k+? its a never ending battle with me.. To save or To Shoot? That is the question. Now, off to heat up my ramen noodles.. Can you figure out what I choose..

I bought an SKS a few months ago and love it

You look like you bought a nice one.

My recommendations

- New Firing Pin with Spring (will reduce chance for slam fires)
- Ghost ring
- Thinner front post
- Cock your SKS (unloaded) and bang on the gun with the safety on
to see if the firing pin fires forward (clicks)

There are a few rifles out there that have been "tweaked" by wannabe gunsmiths. many jobs are great...but....you would want to check that its
a safe rifle before you take it out..

There are many folks that get the trigger work done, and I would check your
rifle to see if you have a negative or positive sear engagement.

(many places on the web show how)

Good luck...... the gun snobs should hush......... this IS a good rifle

Not MOA, but 3-5 inch groups at 100yds are very possible

I think I am gtg with the ten round mag for hunting here in Oklahoma. The only mag restrictions I could find in the hunting regs was for .22 cal centerfires. I don't plan on altering the gun any more than it what was done to it before I got it. Someone removed the bayo and Bayo lugs and also removed the sling mount from the front gas tube.
