I searched for and cannot find an SKS user's thread so I would like to start one.

I would like to start up an SKS users thread. there are tons of information and a strong THR base of SKS users. Lets pool our resources and pack it into one thread. I believe the SKS is one if the biggest bang for the buck. What say you?
If you are an SKS user let's hear from you. POst your pictures and experiences. One of the neatest things that people tend to overlook is "bubba" Bubba you customizing that thing? If you got it flaunt it!
Ok I had no idea that the SKS would be so interesting to shoot. I went to my brother's house and shot to pieces a cinderblock at 80 yards or so with his Yugo SKS. It didn't look too sexy but it was fairly light and fairly accurate. The firepower that thing had with a ten round magazine tore through that cinderblock like nobody's business. I was so impressed I bought a chinese SKS, the late 80's type. Shot so good I picked up a Yugo from a fellow THR.
I believe the SKS's are still cheap enough now and from what I hear they are more accurate than some of the AK variants.
As far as the SKS is concerned it is of my opinion if the Democrats get into power. The price of the SKS will go up.

I have two as mentioned before 1 Yugo and 1 Chinese, the chinese is lighter and shoots awesome. Will be posting pics soon.

SKS prices are on the way up anyway. As supplies of them dry up overseas, the price of all of them will rise.

Personally, while I love the SKS, I love it for what it is, and I usually tell people to love it for what it is. If you want to turn it into some super tactical thing, folks are better off saving up for an AK. They aren't that much more expensive, have less convoluted legal issues, and take better to "tacticalizing."

They are both apart getting worked over. I am inspecting the gas ports and removing leftover comsoline. The Yugo is going to get the wood treatment that Dfariswheel mentioned in oone of his threads using Minwax Antique finisher I believe it is. I will go back and research his thread. He did a good thread on refinishing wood with the idea of finishing in the wood and not on the wood. I hate shellac. I like a very hard and durable, professional finish that you put on with 000 steel wool, layers and time.
The Chinese Is nothing too special. it is going to get another receiver cover and a scope and mount to go on it. That one already has a 20 reound Tapco magazine and shoots well with it. The Yugo is a C&R and I cannot modify it. The chinese will be free game. :D

Dfariswheel's method to a professional wood finish. http://www.thehighroad.org/showthread.php?t=240961&highlight=finish

Here's my two babies (both all matching, all original goodness):

1954 Izhevsk Russian SKS
Russansksoriginal.gif

Chinese Norinco SKS-M (the stocks kinda ugly, but you really dont see many of ths style, and surprisingly, its INCREDIBLY comfortable/ergonomic, and it's a lot of fun with the AK mags :))

I hear that one of the most sought after is the Russian. The Sino you have there looks like it takes AK magazines, nice. I wonder how much money the chinese and the russian will set you back nowadays.

Yup, it takes AK mags.Makes for a lot of fun, and looks kinda cool too.Last I looked, my Russian, beng in darn near mint condition, looked like it would go for $350 or so for the most part, and the Norinco averageds about the same (although I had an offer for $400 once, which I turned down. They were my dad's and are both really clean, original, somewhat unique harder to find sks examples, so I'd never sell, as I'd lose the sentimental value, and end up with hole in my collection, too, so....)
The Russian is likely to draw a fair bit more than usual to an sks nut though, as its a first year production Izhevsk, and they were only made there from '54-55, so, it gets some drools from th sks fanatics quite often. The receipt I have shows my dad only paid $70 OTD for it back in the mid-80's :D) If only he were still around to see what a great buy THAT turned out to be....Probly would have never given it to me...:D

The SKS is quite nice. Used to have one, gave it to my brother. I wish SKS stripper clips didn't suck quite so much though. Push push push, twist, whooo. I got five in, gimme a breather.

Born4spd: the SKS's firing pin is free floating. It can move back and forth freely. This can lead to slam-fires, where the pin will either have enough inertia to ignite the primer or, due to cosmoline/general crud, stick in the forward position. As long as you clean the bolt well, it shouldn't be an issue with Russian ammo. However, I've had a slam-fire with American ammunition and a clean bolt.

When I was in the market for an SKS this site helped me out a lot. While we may get a decent thread going I am not sure how long it will last.

I don't think they are as accurate as some THR-ites claim. "I shot a deer at 700 yards in the rain with my Yugo bubba!" But I think they are nice looking rifles and its fun to collect the various types.

The price is definetely soaring. :uhoh: Just a few years ago Yugos were $100. :uhoh:

I'd say snap em up while you can. Don't tell yourself that they are too expensive and that he price went up.Think about what the price will be like next year. Two years. This is the one I I just picked up on THR. For the price they shoot like 300.00-500.00 right now.

This is what the new Yugo looks like with all of the cosmoline stripped off and the Antique furniture finish that Dfariswheel has been talking about. The only step is to let it harden for a couple of days, after that I will knock off some of the gloss and rub it down. Its an oil finish designed to finish in and not on the wood.

Before.

Wow, that really looks great! What did you use? I missed the thread where Dfarwheel talked about it apparently...

Minwax antique oil finish. I posted Dfariswheel's link to his thread in post #4. Follow his directions the stuff is easy to see. Comes in a Red and White Can and can be found in most Hardware stores that stock good, quality wood finishing products. Homer-depot didn't have the last I checked. This is The Danish oil finish and cures pretty hard.

my scrubbed russian, click on thumbnail for actual size.... scrubbed, it only has a serial number on it, nothing else, except for the import mark.

U.S.SFC_RET-Thans for the link and info.Sorry I toally missed it in your earlier post.My brain goes into energy saving mode on the weekends....

Pic of my "unfired" 1954 Russian Tula, of course it was probably fired before it left the factory. Its marked with a "1" on thefront sight which I heard somewhere means that it acheived very high accuracy marks when it was tested. Picked it up couple years back for $375 and yes she's just a safe queen.

Stock Yugo SKS. One failure to eject, one failure to lock back on an empty magazine. Both happened back to back at the hands of my sister. I immediately proceeded to fire ten rounds without incident. 220 rounds through it so far, and no complaints.

Of course, I don't actually own any guns...
