I didn't own a Walther, and I like service-type pistols.

I ran a thread a week or two back and asked everyone's advice on what sort of Walther I might like to have. The favorites seemed to be the P99 and the PPQ.

I thought, "Cool. I can spend a couple of months tracking down a really good deal on one. It will give me something to do."

Total fail. I found a nice PPQ, barely used with the box and all three grips... for $330, within just a few days. I really don't think I would have found another deal that good if I hunted around for another three months, so I went ahead and bought it.

There is almost no finish wear, and almost no wear on the barrel. The posters who told me how good the trigger is weren't kidding. It's a fantastic trigger.

Does anyone have any advice on preferred ammo or holsters? It only came with one magazine. Is there a particularly good place to buy extras, or any particularly good after-market mags? Any advice on shooting or maintenance? I know nothing about these pistols, other than that other board members told me they really liked theirs.

It's the "M2" variety and has the button magazine release instead of the paddle. I hope to shoot it in the next couple of days. Please forgive the weird lighting in the picture; it looks much better in person.

Having rented one, excellent choice.

Walthers are such high quality that I just bought a Walther in .22, "Made in Germany":
Known here as the "S&W M&P .22", they are designed and produced in Ulm/Donau for Smith & Wesson.

Nice guns made assembled and proofed in EU. Mostly made in Germany with some components like barrels done in Poland where pistols are made under license for Polish police.
One downside of many Walthers is magazines are $40 a piece. Mine came with two. Unfortunately both are eight cartridge so I have to buy six cartrige one myself.:( These guns like Grand Power or Daewoo seem to be real bargains on second-hand market. I look at Walthers as H&K at half or sometimes even third of the price, very nice.

Yeah, I put the large backstrap on. It had the medium one on when I got it, but I have XXL hands, and the larger one feels much better.

Before I got the PPQ and M&P recently, I never gave much thought to whether or not different-sized backstraps were a plus. I was stupid. For someone with hands as large as mine, it makes a very big difference indeed.

I have taught myself to shoot J-frames and micro 380's and so forth. I can shoot them okay, but learning to do so was a long and difficult process. I can shoot N-frames and autos with big grips much more easily.

Great choice! Ya done good.

I had a Q in 9 and liked it so much I got one in .45 -- it's my bedside gun. Probably best out-of-the-box trigger on any plastic gun, balances perfectly for me, and I added a fiber optic and have a headlight slung on the rail. (Just went with the FO on the 9.)
The .45's not got the capacity of a 9...but it's plenty if shtf in the hallway into the bedroom,

You got a great deal and will be thinking about getting one in 9mm within a month. (Start saving.)

I have had a PPQ M2 for a couple months now and I love it. It’s phenomenally accurate, the trigger is excellent, and the ergonomics are also excellent. I think it’s absolutely the best of all the striker-fired polymer 9mm out there and I’ve shot just about all of them.

I did install a fiber optic front sight and blacked-out rear sight set fron Dawson Precision to replace the factory plastic sights and eliminate the adjustable windage feature. I actually would have chosen the Trijicon HD sights if the rear was fixed but oh well.

I also found that the grip texture, while adequate, there isn’t enough of it. The top half of the grip is essentially non-textured and very slippery so I was going to install some Talon Grips but found another company called Traction Grips for about half the price so I tried those and I’m very happy with how it added grip to the gun without adding bulk or changing the feel of the grip.

I’m currently using a Galco King-Tuk for CCW but I’m probably going to add a Streamlight TLR-7 and then find a new holster to fit the PPQ+TLR-7 combo.

Magazines are $30 a pop at CDNN and a couple other sites.

Overall I love the PPQ and I’m always excited to go shoot it because it just gets better every time I take it out.

Mine is in 9mm. Caliber doesn't matter that much to me (between 9, 40, and 45). 9mm was that one that was cheap, so that's what I got.

If I had my druthers I maybe would've preferred 45acp, but 9mm will do. It's just a range toy, but if I had to use it for SD, it seems that 9mm works about as well as any of the other common service calibers.

Hope you like to button Vs paddle. If you have history with using a button and now have a paddle, keep it as a range gun. Your muscle memory may well fail you. But first... Nice choice! Just got the PPQ Q5. 1/10" reset. Just yummy!

It's a button, which is what I'm used to. It's just a range toy either way.

I put 50 rounds through it yesterday and the trigger is excellent. People sure weren't kidding about that. It's probably the best trigger out of all of my poly striker service pistols.

On the subject of paddle vs. button mag release, some people are very passionate about the paddle release, but since I have a huge assortment of handguns and almost all of them have a button mag release it’s absolutely no problem for me.

However I do wish to add a P99AS in the future and for the purpose of continuity between models AND being able to share mags between the P99 and PPQ M1, the paddles would have been equally fine with me. Nothing a little re-training can’t fix.

Yeah, I would have been fine with a paddle mag release. If I'd come across a great deal on one like that, I would have bought it NP.

I don't care for the paddle release on my Pico, but on a full-sized pistol I don't think it would give me any problems.

It's not like it matters much one way or the other for a range toy, anyway.

I still can't get over how nice the trigger is. The few fliers were totally my fault. The rest of the box of 50 removed a tangerine-sized area from the middle of the target. Some days I can do that and some days I can't, but never with a stiff trigger or poor sights.

I concur and have the PPQ M1 and the P99 AS; however, I do not carry my PPQ. Preference goes to the 99 and a DAO. I'm still practicing with the Q(dry fire and range).

M1 in 9 and M2 in 45 here,,,
The 45 fits my hand just a touch better than the 9.
(Paddle release, (M1) once you get the hang of it, is actually pretty nice!)

Nice score :) . I haven't owned an actual Walther but I've had a lot of the European handguns that were inspired by them mostly from Bersa.
