Hello THR,

I am new to the world of shotguns and was looking for some information. The shotgun I just picked up is a Winchester Super-X Model 1. It says its a full choke gun. Here's where my experience will show. Can you shoot jacketed sabots through this SG? Also, does anyone know what this SG is worth? (roughly) It is in mint condition. Any help would be appreciated!

Regards,

This should probably be in the Shotgun forum.

You can shoot Foster style slugs, but accuracy will probably be poor to horrible. Sabots will not work. You need a rifled barrel.

I wouldn't personally shoot sabots or rifled slugs through a full choke barrel. I know there will be a dozen posters come on and say I'm a idiot and that it's perfectly safe because they have done it all thier lives but the fact remains that the constriction of a full choke could cause a castostrofic failure when a solid slug tries to squeeze through.

It's a classic, and built solidly- one member here has upwards of a quarter million rounds through his, busting clays and doing general shotgunnery. And the gun still runs, too. But I too would be leery of shooting a heavy diet of slugs through it...

How long is the barrel on yours?

From the Winchester website FAQ's.
Winchester Ammunition offers two slug designs, the sabot slug or the rifled slug. Sabot slugs are designed to be used in rifled barrels or in smooth barrels with a rifled choke tube. Rifled slugs are designed to be used in smooth barrels. We have found the best accuracy when using rifled slugs in a cylinder or modified choke. We do not suggest shooting rifled slugs through a full choke.

Fixed full choke will not do well with jacket sabots.

SX1 full - any full choked SG I would not shoot slugs out of , be they Brenneke's or the Lead 1oz.

Rifled barrel, designed for sabots, is all they are designed to do, not worth a flip at pellet loads, not versatile at all.

Smooth-bore is versatile Modified or IC , I lean toward Modified for Slugs and Serious SG use.

Nu-Line has the parts, for SX1 and Model 12s. They can also make parts for Winchester guns.
Nu-Line most likely has a barrel, and it it were me, I'd get them to install their excellent external knurled chokes on one. I would leave the original barrel alone.

SX1s come in Field , Target and Winchester Custom Shop. Field has the blue mag tube, other two have chrome , never cared for the chrome, some of us had Win put the blue one in to replace the chrome, or have the Custom shop do it this way.
Wood varies of course...

Tulsa show- fella knew what he had, fella wanting it knew what it was worth, Field grade $500.
Target Grade with two barrels fellow stole this for $750.

I plopped down $150 for a LNIB SX1 so a fella could buy a Benneli to run and gun. Being a nice guy I plopped down $135 for LNIB Model 36 he so he could get a black gun to match his shotgun.

I dunno, his family bought him these guns,I figured the family wanted someone to appreciate the guns, since he was not, and I would, I plopped down the money.
Being even nicer, I took his money at a tourney with a '74 SX1. Maybe he should of bought a more expensive Benelli, or something to help his shooting...

Value - depends on buying or selling. Everyone has their price they say...I'll take:

$1Million in Gold for my retired Field Grade 1974 SX1, 28" barrel [It was fixed Mod originally] with the Nu-line installed external knurled chokes, original owner's manual, and I'll even toss in an extra "O" ring , and bolt handle for it.

SX1 -Finest Semi Auto Shotgun - Period!

Don't try to ruin your barrel by shooting slugs thru it - some people say it is ok but I know for sure that I ruined (well, turned into HD for sure) 2 shotguns this way when I was a teenager in the early 1970's.

One was a Spanish Zabala sxs 12 gauge, full & modified chokes, 28 inch barrel, the other was a mossbery bolt action .410 full choke, 30 inch barrel. Being an ignorant teenager I just had to put some slugs thru those 2 to see how they handled them - after that they had a pattern like a screwed up hourglass. Maybe the spanish gun had soft metal maybe the mossbery .410 was too tight for a slug but I KNOW for a fact those chokes were ruined after that episode.
