Finally after about 20 years of wanting one, I bought an AR-15 tonight. It's a Colt Tactical Carbine. I'll spend quite a bit of time tomorrow taking it apart and cleaning it. Anybody that has any ammo recommendations, fire away. I'm used to getting the LC surplus stuff for my SAR-48. Don't know if these ARs eat the surplus stuff regularly or not. It's a 1 in 9 twist. I'm thinking maybe Holo-sight next. :p

What g56 said.

And if you can't find that try Winchester Q3131A or the other Win type.... can't think of the name right now.

Very nice carbine, I have one myself.

Mine likes Federal XM193 55 grain FMJ-BT, packed in 20 round boxes. I would avoid the XM193PD load, which is loose packed and appears to have some serious QC problems.

Ammoman.com has XM193 in stock as of this morning.

American Eagle .223 makes good practice ammo, too.

Congrats on your purchase.

Another vote on the Federal XM193. I also use American Eagle 55gr .223. Feel free to pick up some Winchester white box .223 at Wal-Mart while you're at it.

If you find a source for Winchester Q3131A, please let us know where you find it. This stuff has dried up.

Don't forget to order some magazines. Stick with the standard USGI Aluminium mags. Stay away from anything steel and/or USA brand.

Places I have order mags from are
CMMG
and
Eagle Firearms

Remember, you can't have too much ammo or too many magazines. The rifle will not work very well without either.

Cheers

I'm jealous!

I ordered my RRA AR 2 wks ago via my local FFL...RRA said 8 - 10 wks for delivery.

I've already got ammo, mags, and holosight, but I'm Jones'n pretty bad for my first AR. Besides, the weather is starting to warm up and I'm itching to get it out to the range.

Congrats, Stevie-Ray. AR-15 is a lot of fun and not a bad way to introduce others to shooting . . . low recoil and ammo is cheap and plentiful. Friend of mine brought a coworker from the Netherlands out to the farm the other day and we introduced him to the joys of shooting. He had never so much as held a gun and my Colt pre-ban brought the biggest grin to his face.

All I usually run through my AR is the polymer coated Wolf, and despite what you'll read on some of the AR boards it works just fine. It's probably a little less accurate than premium ammo but for plinking at the range it's fine, and cheap.

I run Sellier & Bellot through my AR. Never a hiccup.

Congratulations on the Colt. Post some pics when you get it set up the way you want.

So far everything people have posted I agree with. I also shoot Wolf and have never had any problems. I do however clean my rifle after each shoot.

Congrats!

I usually only buy Federal XM-193 or Winchester Q3131A. I wait until I see it someplace on sale or for a very good price and then buy a case or two.
