If anyone is interested in silencers, there is a new website:

Please see the premiere of http://www.silencertests.com

There is a new review of 10 .22 pistol cans from 5 manufacturers. More reviews will follow, starting with 5.56mm cans, and then 9mm.

Also please register in the Silencer Tests forum.

Looks like a fun website.
Hopefully it will take off.
I am doing my best to dispel the internet BS that owning a suppressor is difficult/expensive/too exotic for the average guy....................... It is a shame this attitude exists and is perpetuated by the internet.

I have purchased four suppressors so far this year.

I fully intend to buy a .22LR muzzle can, and a 9mm handgun suppressor asap.

Nice to see this site pop up, I've been looking at the Tactical Innovations suppressors and it was nice to see them compared to others.

Must go peek. This is revitalizing my suppressor interest again.

I quite forget tho - and I know it'll be in the archives somewhere - what is the suggested sequence to getting the tax stamp?? Where to start etc. IIRC you need the stamp first to enable purchase?

Okay, I'll be the one here with some sense...or lack thereof as the case may be...

What's the point of a sliencer for most people?

Alduro - point for me, personally?

Back years ago in UK I rabbit hunted with a suppressed 22 - it was very effective and kept the bunny ''scare'' factor down whilst I walked the fields doing what I was doing ...... plus, despite shooting on a large farm it was also more ''discreet'' when nearer to populated zones around periphery.

Other reason is similar, re less noise for those around. The ranges I use are not really much problem but certainly a session of practice with say 9mm - late in the day - is gonna be way less irksome to folks within hearing distance.

Not essential equipment for me at all - but ''nice to have''.

Really, the only reason we should need is "because they want them," or "because they think they're cool." Arguing necessity is a good way to lose all your guns.

That being said:

I'd love it if my indoor range required handguns to have suppressors (this presupposes the current ridiculous regulations surrounding them went away, of course. Requiring everyone to go through the legal hoops as things are now would be preposterous); I could worry less about my hearing.

I'd love to be able to shoot in my basement without disturbing my neighbors and minimizing the annoyance upstairs.

Ditto my back yard, when I'm in a position to own land, some day.

And that's just me. The applications in recreational hunting, or varmint hunting on a farm probably outweight them.

But when you come right down to it, I want them because I think they're neat. And, since I'm not a criminal, I'm not going to murder anyone, and I'm a (supposedly) free citizen of this country, there's no reason I shouldn't have them.

Let me answer that question with a question:
What is the point to the noise of gunfire ? What purpose does it serve ? Why is it desireable ?
I for one can't think of one positive thing to say about the noise of gunfire.
So, I chose to do away with it.
Simple enough concept ?
You got a muffler on your car ? Why ?

"IIRC you need the stamp first to enable purchase?"
No, just the opposite.
You have to buy the NFA item first, because you need the serial number, vital statistics, manufacturer etc to fill out the form 4.
You pick out what you want, find a dealer to recieve the item, pay, the process begins. Wherever you are buying it has to do a transfer from them to your dealer. Unless of course you are buying an item right off your dealer's inventory. When your dealer gets the item you can then start your own paperwork (form 4). The dealer holds the item until the tax stamp comes back.

"And boy, do I not have $1,000 to spend on them!"
There is nothing on that website that costs anywhere near $1000. Including the gun. Out of all that stuff I listed above that I bought this year, none of it cost $1000, although the suppressed 9mm upper cost over $1000 including the tax stamp. You can buy a Gemtech .22 muzzle can for $299 suggested retail (Outback-II).
Something else to keep in mind is that there is no reason to pay retail for this stuff. You look at this stuff on the manufacturer's website and the prices listed are suggested retail. There are dealers out there offering this stuff for substantially less than retail. Here is a guy selling that Gemtech Outback-II for $275. http://www.ar15.com/forums/topic.html?b=7&f=118&t=262989
The last two suppressors I bought, I saw on the Equipment Exchange on AR15.com. I bought them both from Henry at TitleII Firearms in Pickens South Carolina for subtantially less than retail. http://www.ar15.com/forums/topic.html?b=7&f=118&t=235990 Since I had purchased a suppressor from him previously, he let me have that 9mm upper for $950. If you go to the link I provided above, retail is something like $1300.

I dunno

About the only purpose unmuffled gunfire serves in my hillbilly neighborhood property is making newbies nervous. Gunfire is a relatively common occurance.

Nevertheless, suppressed weapons would be more considerate and neighbourly.

Now, about the above website: All the suppressors showed a great reduction in sound level. However, I found it dissapointing that all of the suppressed results were still near or above 120 db.

Now, as to what's on my wish list:

A DeLisle, which is reportedely very quiet. I figure one would be very good for coyotes.

Surefire's suppressors are also only available to LE/MIL, something to do with them being manufactured in Cali I believe  That is why you generally don't see much info on them.

Edit: Looks like it will be a pretty good site

Right.
I should have given the whole story.
Beside the fact that Surefire can't/won't sell them to us, the people who have actually played with them are not impressed at all. Long story short: you can get a better suppressor from a number of other companies that are located in free states.
FWIW, I got my info from the NFA section of AR15.com

Nice to know, if I ever run across one (unlikely, but whatever.) It's just the Surefire copywriters make it sound like it's the greatest thing since sliced bread. Maybe even better. I'd just like to see how it lives up to the hype. Oh well, looks like it's just hype.
