Ok, my 22LR wheelgun broke today at the range. I'll describe to the best of my ability as to what happened.

Yesterday I took my 22LR wheelgun to the range. We shot a couple hundred rounds through it with no problems whatsoever. Today I return to the range and my brother is trying the gun out. He is shooting in single action mode. For whatever reason, on his third or fourth shot he fails to pull the hammer back completely. It was at this time that the gun fail.

What happens now is that the cylinder freely spins when open or closed. It is very difficult to pull the hammer back and the cylinder release button no longer springs backwards to its default position when released.

The guy at the range mentioned the fact that the little thingy on the bottom of the cylinder would not come back into its upright position to lock the cylinder from spinning....

Any ideas what is wrong? Should I attempt to take the gun apart myself? I am not familar with the internals of wheelguns. How much do gunsmiths charge to fix this problem?

I can't help, but the guys who would know probably need the make at least.:)

You didn't say what kind of revolver, but...it sounds like the cylinder lock at the bottom has hung up on something. Take it to a qualified gunsmith or if it's still under warranty, send it back to the factory so they can repair. Do not try and fix it yourself.
I had a S&W K38 that did the same thing. I sent it to S&W and even though it was not under warranty, they only charged me for the parts to repair it and the shipping back to me.

What make gun?

I had that happen to my Taurus. I managed to open it and repair it myself, just a little dirt in the spring. It failed a short time later again and this time everything was clean but it still failed to work. I had to send it back to Taurus and I'm still waiting for it to be returned. Their customer service sucks.

Open the side plate, being careful not to pry it off or you'll damage the fit. It's a line to line fit usually. See if there's any dirt or debris in there. Maybe a good shot of lube and youll be all set. If it's broken, they you'll need to take it either to a smith or return it to the manufacturer.

Good luck....

The gun is a Taurus 22LR DA/SA. I may try to find a local gunsmith in the Atlanta, Georgia area..... What is the going rate for a gunsmith to fix this gun?

I don't understand why my brother failed to pull the hammer back completely.....

Depends on what's broken and if he'll need to order parts. Again, if it's under warranty, send it back. It would be quicker to do that, than to wait for some parts that may never show up. If it's just a cleaning and tweeking, it might run around $35; that's what my local guy charged me to do some adjusting on my Gold Cup that I couldn't do myself, but no telling if you're going to a gunsmith you've never used before.

timing, as in out of

the little thingy on the bottom is called the bolt which rocks on the trigger ( or its own) screw and allows the cylender to to advance via the 'hand' ( the vertical thingy) below & to the side of the firing pin. Your gun is now 'out of time' re the position of the action parts ( the bolt, hand, hammer & trigger) are out of sync. Taking it apart if you are mechanically inclined & have decent tools, you will either find a broken part or figure out how to reassemble it correctly. Google for a parts diagram & good luck

This happened on my S&W 67. The spring which powers the cylinder bolt had broken in half and jammed up the works. I fixed it myself. Coincedentally the spring which broke was a factory replacement less than a year old. The cylinder bolt and spring were replaced as a unit and I opted to fix it myself, which was a small hassle.

If you have any hesitation about diassembling a revolver and losing springs, or having to mail all the parts in a plastic bag, send it back to the factory. Taurus had my .22 revolver back to me in 6 weeks for a broken firing pin.
