New York to start Handgun Permit Database

I feel like all these proposed gun control laws are like a bad 80's movie meant for viewers tripping on acid.

So ya, just a handgun database for now... give them a few years to settle down... then expand to rifles... then shotguns... then YOUR SOUL... Ya, rinse and repeat... Oh wait, silly us, civilians shouldn't own guns, time for Californiscation.

So you are saying the state building a database of gun owners specifically for the purpose of confiscation (at this time just from those people) and the state getting used to sending armed teams to confiscate guns from citizens may eventually have even worse results for the average gun owner?

And you thought armed patrols and house clearing looking for civilian held 'weapon caches' was only something done in Iraq and Afghanistan.
Soon you may be able to get a job doing it in New York.

For handguns in NY, there was no state wide database. Each county holds the records for its own residents. Typically the county clerks office or sheriffs office in each county would be responsible for any actions re: permits in NY. For many upstate counties, that meant that pistol permits were handled in the most cost effective way possible since the upstate counties did not care much for restricting rights, and the budget for the sheriff and clerks comes from county taxes.

Now the NY state police will get a copy of each license over time. The NYSP are funded directly by the same legislature that put all these draconian laws in place, and the superintendent is appointed directly by the Gov. The NYSP is our own version of the Committee for the Promotion of Virtue and Prevention of Vice.

Price is no object here in NY - if we could waste all those millions on COBIS for years, we can throw a few tens of millions at this debacle as well.

The last sentence is a real hoot. Here in the western part of the State, a 18 year veteran of the NYSP, making over $100K per year and almost being able to retire on 65% salary (benefits included) was convicted of promoting prostitution. Sentenced to 3 years probation and 300 hours of community service, but was fired. (At least someone had some common sense.) All you have to do is Google Titus Taggart for reference.

And the NYSP will determine if I can own/carry/use my handguns? The worst thing I did in 8 years was get a seat belt ticket.
