Orange County is redder than most red states. I grew up there.
LA? Hell, around here when someone asks about Mexico City we say, "Mexico City is a lot like LA, except there are more Mexicans in LA." Mexican soccer dad culture is not as squeamish as our soccer mom culture. They'll eat anything with meat on it, and they've got ways to make it taste great! Ever had Birria? Menudo?
PETA isn't all that much of a presence in either place. You're thinking of the other end of the state.
It's just that most of the old orange groves, bean fields and cattle ranches that covered the area when I was a kid have been sold and developed as subdivisions. Not a lot of deer or habitat, but plenty of people with extra money for rifles.
